Hi
I have a north facing rear garden and I wondered has anyone got any tips on what fruit trees grown well in these.
I have looked at other gardening forums but wondered if anyone here had any thoughts?
Thanks

Re: North Facing garden
Depends how much sunlight it actually gets. If its fairly large then it may get enough light to support any native trees.Trojanhorse wrote:Hi

If its small and in shadow all day long then you are severely restricted what trees it would support, but you could still grow many food plants. a lot of them are quite happy to grow in full or partial shade.

varieties which will do well in a north facing garden are :
Apple - James Grieve-self fertile
Pear -Invincible self fertile
Cherry- Morello- self fertile
Plum- Czar-self fertile
Damson - Merryweather -self fertile
To maximize space growing trees as
CORDON - plant 1m apart ,
STEPOVER - plant 2.5 m apart ,
ESPALIER 4.5m apart.

That is very helpful and thank you.
I have read several articles on the morrello cherry trees and will plant one of these.
Thanks

Re: North Facing garden
In general most trees evolved to get full sun, that is why they are tall and hence are trees. Bushes and shrubs in many cases evolved to live in the understory of forests and hence sometimes tolerate shade much better. If sunlight is an issue maybe you should consider berry bushes. They would supply lots of nutritious goodies for much longer and also, in many cases, have the benefit of looking inedible. Everybody knows what an apple tree looks like but many foragers post SHTF will not consider a goumi or aronia berry to be particularly edible.Trojanhorse wrote:I have a north facing rear garden and I wondered has anyone got any tips on what fruit trees grown well in these.
Forest Gardening is a system in which edible plants are arranged in layers (in terms of height). Those people have put a lot of effort into finding shade tolerant edible perennials to live under the top canopy layers of their fruit and nut trees. A dig round on the internet would probably turn up lists. Here's a link to kick things off...
