Quick, cheap and legal is a couple of flood lights on a PIR, doesn't have to be permenantly wired as they can be plugged into a wall socket inside the house which also means you can switch them on and off independently of the PIR. A lot of people like working in the light, except house breakers

Well done to the dog hope she dosn't get rabies from the low life
Just a note you could get prosicuted by the said low life for being bitten even if it is on your own property. If you have a sign up saying dogs running free or words to that effect this warns people that there are dogs about BUT not garding your property. Do Not have a beware of the dog sign up as that is admiting that you have a dangerous dog.
But if some one does get attacked on your property and does go to the police it is on you to prove that your dog is not agressive and does not attack on a regular bases.

I don't know how our two would respond to a visitor in the early hours. They've never dealt with it. Our old lad would keep them in the 'vacuum'*, barking like mad, until we came down, whether he knew them or not.



*Our front door opens into a long, thin sort of cloakroom space; it's literally as wide as the front door and no more. There's another door, with a big window in it, directly opposite the front door. It acts as a way to keep the weather out of the house while letting people in, and gives us somewhere to hang coats etc and put boots.

Buy yourself some Berberis Thunbergii. It's wicked evil and will tear fabric and flesh to pieces. A few strategically place bushes should put the little barstewards off.

Too much PC in myopinion. My old collie lurcher was agood hunter AND guard dog. And he nailed an intruder back in 1990. What a dog! I love rough justice-we are too damn pc these days!

I am putting all this advice to good use...

No visitors last night thank goodness. More alert neighbours/lights on has helped that, though I am hoping a well-placed nip might have put him off too!

Tin cans freaked out the dog unfortunately, as she is noise sensitive, on the plus side at least she heard an intruder and knew it wasn't the right way people usually come to visit us. Clever little doggie.

We've given her a well deserved romp, for 2 hours in the countryside, and she is now sleeping it off.

Restraining OH from the barbed wire/broken glass approach though, spiky bushes will do it I think, he is now thinking of CCTV to record the blighters as well as lights.

Thanks H, encouraging our existing hollies and hawthorn to thrive on the back fence so we hope they will get larger and bushier soon. Great link btw.

Neighbours are a bit twitchy and putting their lights on the back at the least sound - fine by us as we haven't got a rear light sorted yet....

Great advice all - we are definitely putting it into practice (except the glass bit....) Dog is still nervous and constantly wants to go out the back, so, we are letting her have a good hunt around. No return visitor though.
