I have tried making penny stoves with mixed results. I have made a wood gas stove that was best for wood pellets. You need a one gallon tin to make a good stove for twigs.

The cheapest alcohol if you buy in bulk is bioethanol for bioethanol fireplaces, being about 50% cheper per unit than at my hardware store.
Or if you have a good stil, distill your own home brewed alcohol.

Bioethanol, denatured alcohol, meths, surgical spirit...... All basically the same stuff, I tend to avoid standard meths in my pop-can stoves as the aniline dye makes a big mess

My fire-bag has a hobo made from scrap stainless steel that acts as a wind-shield/pot-stand when I'm using one of the other burner options (pop-can alcohol, Heximine, scrap-wax or Bengazi )
