Which knife?

Post by mushroom »

I'm looking to buy a bushcraft knife but have little idea of what to go for! I have a Swiss Army knife, but would like something just a little larger. I do a lot of gardening and this along with some outdoor cooking prep will be its main purposes. I would like something with a very traditional feel - preferably wooden handled and something not out of place for small female hands!!
I like the look of Opinel knives and have read some very good reviews, but I'm not sure about size and whether to go for fixed blade, lock or folding (doesn't matter from the point of view of not being used outside the home)... knife overload from reading - would be happier going on recommendation! I don't really want to spend over the thirty quid mark as its use wouldn't warrant it. Oh and something with a strong blade which can be sharpened and is not prone to nicks.

Recommend away please :)

Which knife?

Hi.

Opinel do great & well priced pocket knives. But certainly not what I would call a bushcraft knife.

The mora clipper is a great price for a strong blade, that is incredibly sharp, with a comfortable grippy handle. I don't think it is too big for smaller female hands.

Finally - people always forget about sharpening. So a stone should also be on the list for me.

For around £30 I would go for -

An opinel #6 or #7 £6.50
A mora clipper £10
4000grit sharpening stone £14

Cheers

Matt

Try and get a full tang knife- one where the blade and handle are one continuous piece of metal.

If the scales fall off/break through battoning you still have a functioning knife.
Two is one and one is none, but three is even better.

I would not recommend this knife, it's essentially a poorly made lump of steel with a poorly finished bevel on it, no edge to speak of, it weighs a ton & the scales will have you in tears with blisters after 20 seconds of use. Horrible things!

I was of the same train of thought, if you want to buy a knife that needs a lot of re-working then they are perfect, if you don't get a Frosts Mora and an Axe

You could always go look for cold steel bushman knives, very simple design and one piece of steel.

Other models are available
