What are we prepping for?

I've been watching 'Doomsday Preppers' this week and there is a wide variety of events being considered by the people shown.

Other universal considerations are food and water, surprisingly medical supplies aren't getting much mention apart from people prepping for a pandemic.

My preperations so far are based on liklihood (days and weeks without food and energy supplies with only first aid and the kind of injuries you'd go to A&E with) but having seen a country fall apart with civil war it's in the back of my mind also.

I'm interested to know what people in the UK are prepping for with regard to longer-term events (months and years) and what preperations are specifically relevant.

I'm of the " hope for the best, expect the worse" category, and therefore my preps try cover all aspects however outlandish they maybe.

In that way I hope I manage to be ready for anything..

Just the lottery to win then the Bunker, BOV and BOL
Two is one and one is none, but three is even better.

Im quite boring in regard to the reason why I prep, Im not worried about zombies  , Not overly concerned with asteroid impacts, A bit interested in solar flares but the reason I prep is because it just seems stupid to rely so heavily on government, supermarkets etc. We have seen recently the effect of economic instability in greece, The U.S has announced today 85bn in cuts with Hundreds of thousands of jobs forecast to be lost. The U.K has lost its triple A rating, Basically I think its naieve to think the world is going to bounce back from this global recession anytime soon. I have first hand experience of the recession with the loss of a business and home and know many others in a similar situation. So we have the recession to contend with as a starter, Then fuel price increases, food price increases, Etc, etc.
So I store food long term as its a hell of a lot cheaper now than it will be in 10 years, Call it my retirement nest egg and if TSHTF Im covered for a while.
I carry good first aid kits because its sensible to do so.
I grow my own fruit, veg, chickens, eggs etc because it tastes better than supermarket crap and because we always have done.
I have loads of candles, firelighters, torches, etc because we have powercuts every winter and again if the shit hits im covered for a while.
we have a multi fuel stove as our main source of heat because we dont have gas and electricity is too expensive and again if anything happens we have heat and something to cook on.
So I guess what Im trying to say is that like a lot of you I do worry about the future for both my family and myself and its nice to know that I have kit and some skills if something was to happen But mainly We prep for financial reasons and for what I class as pretty sensible reasons..Did say it was a bit boring lol.

sheepster .
i don`t think the reasons you have are boring or unrealistic .
i`d say they are pretty much the same as mine with one or two exceptions .
i do expect people to loose control if they can`t get enough to feed them selves or their familys .
not the zombie type or roamoing gangs ,just those deperate enough to try anything they`d not normally consider .
you can`t rely on the powers that be to look out for you , this you need to do for your self .
YES i walked away mid sentence , you were boring me to death and my survival instincts kick in .

You sound a bit like me! I have not lost my home, but I have lost 2 jobs inside a month. I never earned a massive amount of money, ever. I did always earn a good solid wage though. And with that Jan and me always looked forwards. Always making sure we had enough if things went wrong. We have done ok,and still are. We have always... Prepared.

Because we have that mindset, if anything else happened(however far-fetched) we would be better placed than most.
In three words I can sum up everything I have learned about life: It goes on.

Robert Frost.

Covid 19: After that level of weirdness ,any situation is certainly possible.

I was always under the impression preparing for the coming hoards of "zombies" was code for civil unrest.... It certainly is for me, just look at what happened in London with the youth rioters out stretching the met!!!!

So yes I'm preparing for the zombies, why they come could be because of an EMP, hyper inflation, no more food/fuel, or a world without rule of law due to a catastrophe.

Either way I'm trying to make sure I have at least 3 months of food(as a start), heat, fuel, light, a way to cook without gas/electric and most importantly have the tools to defend myself if needs be.

Molon labe!!!!!!

I'm prepping for hyper-inflation, food/fuel shortages or a pandemic. They're the most likely scenario's for me and the net result is that we should be able to survive without electricity or gas for as long as we need to. I firmly believe that should any of these happen for an extended period of time then we need to protect ourselves as well, I'm taking the necessary steps to tick all the boxes.

This subject seems to pop up on a regular basis, the most probable disruption to normal life for most people is going to be loss of one or more incomes in the family for whatever reason, but it is unlikely to lead to a lot of the scenarios a lot might think will happen.

When was the last time we saw some of these wildcat scenarios in the UK that required so many to take up arms (of whatever type) to protect themselves from the massed hoardes on a raiding party of all and sundry, pretty much a fantasy that needs to be brought under control fairly soon IMO.

It does make for a good information for putting in a book though, probably in the fiction section ;)

Sure, the captain of the Titanic said something similar if I recall. That's the thing about unlikely events, they're only unlikely until they happen ;)

When was the last time we had hyper inflation in the UK?

When was the last time there were house to house raiding parties due to hunger?

When was the last time there was no more food available?

Yes we will face fuel shortages in the future, yes we may face a pandemic like in the early part of the 20th Century, but when was the last time we had a world without rule of law.

There are thousands or possibly millions of possibles out there, but a lot less probables in the UK.

These Probables are what I am looking at when doing my Preps
