Re: Bunkers to Order
I have thought about the underground shipping container option for a while now, even the other half has agreed on it.
Finally moving to the country where I would have the space to put one and in time I may well do.
If it is ever needed or not is a different matter but think I would prefer to have one and not need it then need one and not have it.

I take it i'm not the only one who has looked at these things, i have thought about a bunker, but i am not in any shape to have one, although a friend has looked into the container thing and was told he needed no planning to drop one in the ground?
Driving home along the A27 this morning, i could not help dreaming of owning one of those lovely hills and putting a structure inside one so it looks the same apart from slits horizontaly so it looks like a giant pill box, underground, but up high, i like that idea, propper dreamer me.

Good luck, have you really thought about all the implications involved though?Balian wrote:I have thought about the underground shipping container option for a while now, even the other half has agreed on it.

I read somewhere that a cubic foot of sub-soil is quite heavy, and there is going to be a lot of it to move to get a container underground, even if you only just cover the top with an inch or two of soil, 1280 cu ft of soil is a fair few skips full

Re: Bunkers to Order
The idea was to bury it to almost ground level and either put the polytunnel or garden shed over it, hiding the entrance in them.
That way it wouldn't be bearing much weight on the roof.
It is something that would require a lot more thought and research but an option.

Bunkers to Order
I've read lots of articles and watched videos of people using shipping containers as underground shelters. I really like the idea and would love one myself but I just dont have the room or time for a project like that.
Maybe one day when we move and have some more land I'll look into it again.

Re: Bunkers to Order
Dont know what your planning for but how about something along the lines of a storm shelter, like the "storm shelters porch unit pod" (Check it out on youtube), as its not fully underground i can see this being more adaptable to the uk prepper market.

Re: Bunkers to Order
I must admit I was under the impression that you did not need planning permission for anything underground.
Personally I would keep shtum and do it anyway.
Just make sure you don't dig through any pipes and you should be OK.
If you could afford something similar to railway sleepers you could place them across the roof to take the weight.
You could even bury the container slightly deeper and have the ground either side taking the weight of the sleeper so there is nothing on top of it whatsoever.
I know there are a couple of good videos on youtube for burying containers.
Be lucky (and leporine)
