I was on IRTH recently and was looking at there urban foraging post and it got me thinking. What have you got in your local area in terms of free food that can be foraged.
Personally I know I have 5 fruit bearing trees in the local area. With several bushes again fruit bearing and many other things.
Anyone else had this idea?

Re: Urban foraging
blackberries, plums, sloes, mushrooms in a woods 10miles away but visited often, pears, apples, cooking apples, might try some rosehip jelly this year and was going to give birch sap a test but didnt get round to it properly.
oh and the woods also has wild raspberries. I think there are wild strawberries too but near a nasty industrial area...
walnut tree and various hazel trees all around.
plenty of unexplored hedgerows that are on the list o be checked this year.
have been looking for various roots (horseradish etc) on last few walks and will keep going with this.
little gems food for free book always in rucjsak helps.

Re: Urban foraging
got most of the above in my back garden, if you find raspberys blackberrys goose berrys ect growing in the wild lare some off,i.e. put a lenth to the ground and put a stone on it go back later in the year and the section will have roots on under the stone just cut it off and walk away with it in your bag you can do it with most fruits strawberrys send off runners.
Re: Urban foraging
Dandelions in my garden, yes but oh, I wish I had a walnut tree I knew of nearby! Sweet chestnut, yes, in a nearby wood. And rowan berries on the rec. ground in front of my house, forgot about them!
