Phone Apps?

Post by essgee23 »

Wanted to see what suggestions or recommendations you have?

I've got a few litle apps on my phone - more for looking over in down time rather than relying on (for obvious power reasons etc)

I currently have:

SAS survival tips (Lofty Wiseman)
Flashlight Ultra
Firstaid live
Compass
Maps
Navigation
Local Guide

Have just downloaded a BOB blog/tips type thing - but not amazingly impressed yet so may dispose of.

Have already binned:

A bushcraft guide - was too wordy and expansive, wanted short and succinct like the SAS guide.
Wild Veg guide - wanted specific European advice and it was too USA heavy.
Also had a National Geographic doomsday preppers app and another preppers one but both were naff (IMO)

So what others should i get? :D

Not a technophobe, but I would not rely on a smart phone in a SHTF situation.

A smartphone is a great and powerful tool but quite right it shouldn't be the only tool in the box.

I have an app that uses both GPS and compass and orientates the maps to the positioning of the phone. As I have lousy sense of direction it is great and it even tells me how fast I am walking.

One major pain about android phone apps is the screen. If it is sunny you cant see anything at all and it becomes close to useless.

That depends on the phone rather than the operating system, mine have all been fine in that regard.

Phone Apps?

I have podcast great for listening to things you are constantly learning. I do have the usual maps. As well a a OS map finder app which downloads the maps onto you device so will work providing have power, as well as having the usual apps you would find on your mobile device.

I always carry a hard copy map if I'm going somewhere I don't know and will never depend solely on technology all it takes Is a terror threat or attack of the us and your GPS would go down, as happened during 9/11.

I think phones and associated apps can be a great help. But there are no substitute for hard copies no matter how much of a space saver they are.
