Jute Rope and Tea Light candle wax fire-lighters.

Post by nickdutch »

Jute Rope and Tea Light candle wax fire-lighters.

One plastic microwave food container and one small “nibbles” thin steel one cup measure was taken. The wax of three tea light candles was crumbled into the small one cup steel pot. Hot water from a freshly boiled kettle was poured into the microwaveable plastic container and the metal pot was floated on the hot boiled water. After a few minutes, the wax had completely melted.
Lengths of jute rope (5mm diameter) between three and six inches was then dipped almost completely into the wax and was then left to dry on grease-proof paper until all the wax was used up. The process was repeated and the jute fire-lighters were placed for safe storage in an old tobacco tin.

(This is a very safe way of melting small quantities of wax at home and doesn't require having pots over a flame.)

You're right there.

Never melt wax over a flame or in direct contact with a hot-plate
You should always use a double pan or a bain-marie

If you do get a wax fire treat it as a chip-pan type fire

Are you using old/surplus sash-cord, or is it twisted rather then braided ?

This is cool. I'll have to give that a go (although we don't have a microwave in our house!). :D

DONT USE A MICROWAVE !!!!

Just A plastic container to put the boiling water in that is durable to take the heat of boiling water from the kettle

Why not ?

Is it because of the metal aspect? or some other reason?

Some Microwaves are metal friendly apparently ;)

Ever seen a wax fire?

Use a water bath/bain marie or a double boiler as the flash point of wax is higher then 100 C

Microwaves are just not suitable at all for melting wax (paraffin or bee's)...... Hell, melting butter can be tricky enough and thats less likely to volcano when it burns

Not seen one as I use double pan method myself, on the gas ring in the kitchen, just have it on a simmer though rather than letting it get too hot. I just find it useful to try and find out why someone should tell me not to do something but not explain why I shouldn't do it.
