Tablet instead of memory card

Post by cedders73 »

Was reading some peoples are keeping info on memory card, papers, deeds, photos etc... then also some other were saying that they are packing some books, SAS survival, prepper cookbook and other title, some also some king of games/dvd for the kid entertainment so I thought that all of that will take space and weight in a bag and wanted your feedback about an idea: what if I could keep all of that on a tablet pc with external micro card extension? you can have a folder with all the IDs that you need along with info, all the book you could ever need (including some book on self sufficiency, long term base camp, cooking and growing) some movies, music, games (backgammon is a must) but also Maps and plenty of other apps that can be very helpful. Or you could keep them in different Micro card, at £15 for 32GIG I would not mind investing in a few. Now I know that power could become and issue but you have a lot of alternative way of charging phone and tablet, not going to get into details as I am sure all of you will know them. The only potential problem would be if the pc break down or malfunction and the Micro card get damaged....
what are your thought??

It's an idea but tablets can be expensive.

I have books and paperwork etc on a usb memory stick. I also have it all on the memory card in my phone along with news and weather apps, sat nav that doesn't need a data connection & detailed OS maps for the whole country with GPS (location, not navigation). You could have all that on a tablet, I've seen basic 7" tablets for ~£30

I will just add that firstly cheaper tablets may be poorly built, which would in turn possibly hinder battery life.

If you've already got a tablet you use for every day stuff (for the commute etc) then yeah, why not.

But Smartphones nowadays have sufficient storage and can do *almost* everything a tablet can just with the reduced size.

I stay away away from Apple as the price is a joke for what you get!!!! When I updated my phone, I managed to get a good deal at Carphone warehouse. I got a free Samsung S3 mini and a Samsung Tab2 7" for free, both phone and tablet can have extra external memory up to 32Gig so I thought I might as well use it for that rather than let it rust in a drawer... not a perfect solution as if it was a EMP attack it will become a lovely paper weight but so would a memory stick ;)

i think it really would depend what you are keeping on the memory card. i have a kindle with all the books i would find useful. i can charge it with a power monkey, from my vehicle, or via generator. with that and my laptop i would hope 1 will give me a bit use before it breaks. no matter what you store your data on you will need something to read it on and that always comes down to power. if it is totally essential have hard copies. but a cheap tablet is not really worth it. buy good quality and it is likely to be of more use. i have a kindle fire for work and although very good. for another £100 i could have got something far better with much more battery life.

At the risk of harping on :D I would go for a basic kindle simply for the battery life, 3 -4 weeks with wi-fi off and with the new apps you can scan and upload all you personal docs etc direct to it

I do all this web thingy on Apple products. No virus problems blah blah. Howeve,I have a library of REAL books and documents(the ones that prove you exist) are in fireproof containers.
