This is for:
short circuit
On your photos you are hatching your own birds. We have chickens and we are going to start to hatch our own chicks.
Q. Is it best to just go out and buy a incubator or try to hatch with something I knock up myself.
Is there any other dos and don't we should know before we start !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Firstly do you have a cock or just chickens? you need both you say you have chickens dont any go to sit on the eggs? you will normaly get an older one that likes you hatch them it will be the one you find sat on the eggs each time you go in she will just need her own box and food and drink near her...ptans wrote:This is for:

Depends really if you don't want to have to turn them twice aday its better to get one that turns them but one will set you back a good few quid
I made ours out of a fish box with lid from asdas fish stall amd put plasic window into the front and put a heat wire and temp control in the lid...
some things you need to know:
Incubation periods for birds...
Quail 16 to 21 Days
chicken 21 to 22 Days
Duck 27 to 28 Days
Avoid temperatures outside the 97-103° F. range
and keep a small tray of water with a spunge in the incubation unit
You need to get proper chick mash food after thay hatch it contains drugs to stop them getting nastys.
oh and put an x and date on your eggs its easyer to remember if you have turn the eggs
you cannot keep any cocks unless you have your own land away from houseing
even quail cocks are noisy and peck at the hens head when breeding and ducks are messy
And finaly you need to keep your babys warm after comming out the unit so your going to need a cupple of large plastic boxes with holes drill in lid and sides and a small light over it to keep it warm

Re: First attempt at growing veggies in pots
Thanks very useful
Yes we have a cock and 10 chickens The cock is young but seems good, 8 of the chickens was rescued form a farm, so they are not broody and the other two are young.
so I think we will have to go down the incubator.
