Re: For City Dwellers !
What if we all start this summer, trying to become self sufficient in just one thing ? It could be lettuce or salad greens or tomatoes or even cress (
for posh folk who like egg mayo sandwiches lol) - Just one thing - but try for total self sufficiency in it all summer. And every time you do a shop, price that one thing and put by the money it would've cost. That money can go to new preps.
Tomatoes are dead easy if you have a south facing window, they just grow themselves .

I like this.
I'd planned on planting some potatoes and carrots in pots on the patio next month... I might try some salady bits too.

Lil, there is no nutrition value in salad greens, the easiest thing to grow is broad beans-they virtually grow themselves, also try squashes and broccoli or brussels.diamond lil wrote:What if we all start this summer, trying to become self sufficient in just one thing ? Salad greens DO have nutritional value..
From http://www.ext.colostate.edu/pubs/foodnut/09373.htmlGreen leaves are nutrient rich because they contain the light-catching, energy-converting machinery of plants. Salad greens contain Vitamin A, Vitamin C, beta-carotene, calcium, folate, fiber, and phytonutrients (see Table 1). Leafy vegetables are a good choice for a healthful diet because they do not contain cholesterol and are naturally low in calories and sodium. Many of the health benefits that leafy greens provide come from phytonutrients, unique compounds that provide protection for plants. These compounds are becoming recognized as part of a nutritious diet that promotes long-term health

Re: For City Dwellers !
OK i give you that, but people can grow all their families requirements for salad greens on a window ledge or balcony and lets remove allthe "commercially" grown salad stuff(i.e. Thanetearth) and replace it will REAL veg or fruit-what would you rather eat-lettuce or strawberries??scoobie wrote:Salad greens DO have nutritional value..

Lettuce in my sandwiches, and strawberries for afters please... but only if I can have it with proper clotted cream
I've grown salad stuff before (lettuce, spring onions, cucumbers, tomatoes, radishes) and they were all really really easy to grow and would recommend it to anyone. My chilli plant failed miserably though...
I'm going to grow some veg this year, but not decided what yet...guess I should start to plan that soon!
