Hexi Stove

Post by mushroom »

Was at the car boot today and found a guy selling 3 Hexi Stoves for £1!! Bargain! Well, almost. When I got them home I found that the boxes of hexi tabs inside were soaked through! Ripped off the wet cardboard and have laid them out to dry them off (the stoves themselves are fine). Tablets have gone very crumbly. Do you think they'll still burn as well once dried out? And is there any specific way you would store them once dry or will a plastic box do? Thanks

they should be fine to burn as they are wax coated and need breaking apart to light normally

I have a hexi in my BOB along with a big aluminium mug, fairly easy to make a brew or make some food hot and the mug and hexi frame make it a bit easier to use bits of wood for fuel when the hexi runs out :-)

i use hexi tabs all the time and cocomut oil for my cooking needs.
i dont use the stove cuz they are crap, instead i use sticks/stones or dig a small pit to cook with.
as for storage i wrap and tie them in the finger of a latex glove, knowing that they are water tight.
dry them out and they should be ok

I also have a hexi stove in my BOB, I store the tablet by 4, that would be enough to boil some water and can also add some kindling if need be, I use a vacuum/sealer bag so it is always protected. If you don't need the 3 stove you could sell the spare on flea-bay and get enough to buy 24/36 tablets with the profit :D

as long as it is fresh water they will be fine once dry. the stuff is just harder to light when wet. salt water just makes them spit a bit.

They will be fine after that.. Just remember when you use them break them to smaller bits (1/4 origional size is good) then you get lots more heat from them. They do burn faster though.. 2 military tablets will boil a metal mug full of water easily.

I reckon they'll be fine once they've dried out.

I love little hexi stoves. Used to use them in the Scouts and have used them in the mountains over the years too. Handy little things, even though the fumes are something else! :D
