Made mental notes of the best and thickest hedgerows locally (one on the outskirts of a golf course) that might have enough fallen wood to be useful in the kelley kettle for out door water heating for washing and washing up and cooking. Going to try and keep a plastic bag in my pocket so that I can continually collect scraps of wood for fuel when I am out so that I can reduce the quantity of time that I use the boiler to make heat for hot water. This evening I am going to see if I can make a collar for the top of the kelley kettle chimney so that it can work more like a wood gas stove and burn off the smoke in the early stages of combustion to make it more pleasant to use and to reduce the risk of discovery or upsetting the locals as I use paper as fuel a lot.

Went for a mooch round here http://www.exetersurplus.com/ today (no affiliation). Never been before but crammed with all sorts - well worth a look if you happen to be passing through Exeter! Just bought a tilly lamp and a couple of new mess tins.

Went to a recycling yard after that and found lots of new (surplus again!) bits and pieces - including 4 light sticks (8 hours), camping anti-bac wipes and insect repellent - £1.50 all in! Bargain!

Just taken delivery of a large supermarket food order... I think if we were bugging in from today we'd probably be okay for about 4 months with what came today added to our stores!

The family and I have just returned from a trip around the country and I am now trying to find out who owns the woods I have drove past after making notes on the names of the roads.

If anyone knows how to find out who owns common land with no mailing address without having to pay for it I would be most appreciative.
All I have found so far is landregistryservices.com who want to charge £34 and landregistryonline.net who wish to charge £34.95. Surely this information is freely available somewhere?

I was hoping that a library would have this info for free but I would like to know if they do to save a wasted journey. I'd like to go camping in several different woods but not without the expressed permission of the land owner...
If you live near a local Land Registry office pop in, their customer services will be able to look up the land on the Register index map and see if its registered, if it is, for a small fee you can get a copy of the register document which will give you the info you need.

I used to work for the land registry a while ago.

People I know who run seed picking businesses (for a few months each year) just ask the locals very often - good pubs will know. It takes time, tho, thats for sure. Seems mad, doesn't it!

The land I was on is council owned, at least *they* advertise the fact.

Family member has started to teach me how to arc weld. My first project is my version of Ray Mears Griddle. I'm getting there and it 's sturdy enough but the welds ain't pretty. Though I'm chuffed to bits with it so far :P

EDIT: poor spelling sorted.

Bit more moving home planning this morning. I've been sat with the laptop looking at the local council website and I now have saved a map of all the allotment sites in the city and a map of all the nature reserves and woodland. I'm going to put my name down for an allotment when I move back. Heaven knows how long the waiting list is, but the sooner I apply, the less time I have to wait (hopefully ;) )

Back to London later. Boo :( Will get some packing done when I get in.

Went for a day out today, diverted myself from where I'd actually *chosen* to go  but it was brilliant - I ended up on a beach that was used in Victorian times as an oyster bed, and there must still be oysters there somewhere: picked up loads of shells from the beach, and because they're nice and flat, I'm going to put them on my garden, to help hold down all the half decayed leaf mould I surrounded my shrubs with yesterday :) some of them were thick and heavy, and some of them were flaking like limestone, its a win-win whatever they do.
