I've ordered the recommended book and will do the test soon. In the mean time wanted to ask what would be a basic car set up to start with? Also does anybody know if a cb aerial could interfere with a ham aerial when mounted on the same car (on opposite sides at the back) ?

Starting set up depends on what you want to do, VHF, UHF you can start for under £300 new. A CB Aerial will not cause interference unless you are using the CB to Transmit. Make sure that the CB Radio or Ham Radio is switched off when the other is in use.

Basic Car Set up Examples (NEW)
Transceiver Wouxun KG-UV920P
Multi-band Transmit/Receive - RX: 66-108MHz (100kHz spacing) 136-174MHz & 350-480MHz. TX: 144-145MHz & 430-440MHz. (136-174 + 400-480MHz export). Dual Receive

Price : £229.95

Coax cable
Mounting device, I.e Mag Mount Hatch Mount

Diamond SPM-35 Mag Mount
Price : £41.95
Aerial : £19.95 Dual Band

how big is your wallet?

some links to look at:

Martin Lynch Chertsey Surrey http://www.hamradio.co.uk/
Waters & Stanton PLC, Spa House, 22 Main Road, Hockley, Essex. SS5 4QS. UK http://www.wsplc.com/
Nevada Radio, Unit 1 Fitzherbert Spur, Farlington, Portsmouth, Hampshire, PO6 1TT http://www.nevadaradio.co.uk/

the three biggest dealers in the UK, there are others and I have no interest in any of them other than a customer.

If you want specific recommendations on kit PM me.

Thanks again. As I don't know what to look for yet, I will go through my tests first and then buy kit, otherwise I may buy something I will regret later. I think that's the wiser way :D

Being able to communicate on a distance of at least 20 miles and I'm aiming to have one set in the car and one at home. But it all depends on the cost of it all. Looking at it at the moment I think it's quite expensive (when compared to cb for example).

2 Meters VHF depending on terrain should work. You may have a repeater close that is useable. take a look here for Coverage Map.

I still don't quite get the difference between the 2m and 10m - all I know is that the bigger the better. Does the repeater system only work for 2m radios or would it work for 10m as well? Which network is bigger?
I had a look at the Wouxun that you recommend. I like it. Is it in the 2m or 10m range?
Also a recommendation for a handheld radio with a range of around 2 miles or more? This could be useful when out and about and if we get separated so we could get in touch if no phone signal.
