USB Wind Up Charger

Post by Bladerunner »

I am after a wind up charger that takes a USB cable.
I have a wind up torch that has connecters for different types of mobile phone but it doesn't have one that will take a USB cable.

I went to Maplins to see if they had one or could make one for me but the guy just looked at me like I had two heads and started sprouting off about how USB's had capacitors or resistors or something else techy that made it impossible.

Now I am not one to call him a liar but I am damn sure someone on here either knows how to make one or can tell me where I can get a USB wind up charger.

I know I have seen some really small elcheapo kinds on Fleabay but they wouldn't charge anything and look really weak and plasticcy. (is that a word?)

Any help as to where I might acquire one would be appreciated.
Thanks

Any kind of wind up charger could be made to deliver to a USB socket, you just need 5v DC with regulator. Anything from 200mA to a couple of amps is good.

Have a look at this. It has a USB port, and works for me.

Thanks for the help.
The blue one on Amazon was the one I thought looked a bit plasticcy but if anyone has one and can tell me otherwise I would be grateful.

I have a few wind up radios but not one with SW or a USB port.

I might go for the radio if no one can recommend the blue one.

Thanks and be lucky

Just out of interest - why choose a windup charger rather than a solar charger? Would a solar charger, with no moving parts, be a more reliable device?

There are plenty of days in the UK when you won't get enough of a charge to do anything useful. You might get a solar charge and want to carry on doing something when its almost gone. And on principle, a prepper learns not to rely on one source of anything - one source of something is a good start, an essential start, in fact, but you can't rest on that permanently.
