security in a ground floor flat

Post by cambprep »

hi all, ive been thinking about making my flat alot more secure but im on a limited budget at the moment.
i was thinking of buying a few 12mm sheets of ply and cutting them to fit doors and windows when needed.
the problem i have is that i live on a main road which stops me from really fitting them and testing them.
there doesnt seem to be much either side of the double glazed windows to secure the panels to either.
ive been looking in DIY stores for brackets to make wooden barracades for the front and back door and to help reinforce the ply on them both.
but it seems i need something custom made?
any tips on making this flat more secure would be amazing.
i have a house alarm which im going to add more sensors to and it has a backup battery but that doesnt last long at all.
many thanks

Do you own or rent the flat? i.e. Can you bolt into the brick?

What's the area like around the flat? Can you make that more difficult terrain, harder to cross?

Do yo have a BOL? What you infer you are preparing for is an attack on your flat. Might be safer not to be there.

Most double glazing is inserted from the inside, you could swap the glass for wood easily enough and put it back after or if you wanted stronger use long coach bolts in your outer wood and bolt through some 4x2 on the inside (glass again removed for replacement later) doors opening inward could leave enough room to insert a hefty batten acroos the door gap and bolt through again, if you have ever seen those temporary perforated metal sceens that councils put on empty property to prevent damage, they are fixed in a simular way so as they can be removed with little if any damage to the windows and doors behind.
I have a strategy, it's not written in stone, nor can it be, this scenario has too many variables, everything about it depends on those variables, being specific is not possible.

When I lived in Germany my apartment had the most amazingly secure door ive ever seen. It was steel coated and had the usual locks on the side of the door. But it also had something like this fitted to the door itself.

You could lock it from the inside and out, giving the door amazing strength. If I still had an apartment id certainly invest in something similar.

hi, thanks fr the replies, i rent the flat but my landlord has said before that if i can do work on the flat without his help then to go for it.
yeah im planning for an attack on my flat and me if things carry on the way they're going then im going to need to be safe in here.
there is a flat entrance at my back door for the flat upstairs its pretty built up.
i dont have a BOL at the moment but im working on it. im going to get some OS maps and have a little look around.
thanks for the links ill have a look now

Tee Hee Hee,.... Now Now!!   But heh!!

To OP: Why do you think such security is needed? Is it the general area that is concerning you? If so, then poppypiesdads' advice is sound and maybe a 'move' should be in the planning. It could be more effective just to be somewhere else,.. I think Mr Miyagi coined the phrase: 'Best Defence is Not to be there!'
