Food for your BOB

Post by Carrot Cruncher »

I was wondering what food people have or plan to have in their BOB's. If you take a general rule of thumb that your BOB will allow you to survive fairly comfortably for 72 hours, what food are you taking with you ?

My BOB is for 2 people unfortunately so if I went down the route of 24hr Ration packs I would need 6 packs (although I could probably stretch it from 4 packs) which apart from being expensive also weighs a fair bit. I know some people just have enough Oat type energy bars to last but I was looking for something a bit more (in my opinion :D ) edible.

My BOB is at the stage where I have the right kit to survive but I'm looking to refine what I have to reduce weight, and one of the areas I know I could change for the better is food.

All ideas and options appreciated

Tricky one this... I guess you need foods which are calorie dense, but are perhaps more slow release..

Off the top of my head:

Dried fruit
Nuts + Seeds
Flapjack bars

I guess in your BOB you should have a means of heating/cooking food too, and making a brew, so how about some pasta+sauce type foods, or dried noodles?

Couple of tins of all day breakfast and/or chilli in a tin?

I guess it comes down to weight and size really, and how much food you would need in 72hrs if you were on the go (worst case scenario) Oh..and what you'll actually eat :)

All i have in my BOB is instant noodles and bachelors golden rice, 10 of each, easy to pack, light weight and will keep for months even years, and nice n cheap from the supermarkets, can be easily rotated and eaten every few months,

Its impossible to carry a fully balanced diet of food so slow release high energy grub is the answer and leave the pate in duck sauce behind...LOL

Usual choc bars etc, i also keep oxo cubes and sugar cubes, sugar on the tongue when your drained is like a turbo kicking in

ive used chicken oxo cube for a savoury version on the sugar, only use small pieces of oxo though as its a bit explosive on the tongue LOL, but it does work ive used it when ive been mountain climbing and its comforting so keep in few in the BOB

Keep prepping folks i believe the game we been waiting for is just about to start to get interesting this year !!!

Some good ideas there, thanks. At the moment mine consists of Cup-a-Soups (light wt but not enough calorific value) Packets of Mixed Rice & Veg, A couple of tins of Spam ( I love spam and it can be eaten hot or cold), Tinned Hotdogs, because I like them and they come with their own brine so can be heated up easily without having to add any water, and some energy bars.

The problem is the tins (especially the hotdogs) add a fair bit of weight and the Cup-a-soups dont really add much in the way of calories so need replacing. I dont like noodles or pasta though so they wouldnt be much good for me but my wife does so maybe I could replace 1/2 of the what I have with them and add more in the way of packet rice for me

Cant get rid of the Spam though :D

Thanks for the Links Lisa, I will have a look later

I haven't got a BOB because I'm not moving. If I had to get out urgently then my daughter is 4 miles down the road. But I'd think some Mars bars, and maybe some of those protein shake things (like Spiru-Tein) that you could add to water. Bodybuilders and fitness types use them, but so do people who have lost appetites & cant eat much. They are very filling, liquid protein.

CC,

We have this sort of thing in our BOBs - much lighter than 'wet' rations.

Thats an excellent idea and could be a direct replacement for the cup-a-soups, will have to look into that.

Hobo, they look very good and are definitely light wt. but a little bit expensive for me, or more correctly, more expensive than i would be allowed to spend by MrsCC ;) . A good alternative to the 24hr Ration Packs though

As well as for our BOBs we keep some as part of our longer term preps. Ditto wet rations. Adds variety to the rice n lentils!

Spiru-tein is hellish dear as well, but it is really a full meal in a glass of milk, maybe worth getting one tin, its powder and not heavy. It kept me alive when I had really bad ME and couldn't face food for many months.
