Any reason why you wouldn't use a more 'normal' aquaponic fish instead of the goldfish?

I know the USA are keen on talapia, not sure how it matches our climate. I also read about trout for a UK system.....

Cheers!

When I first heard of aquaponic's people used talapia's but they are warm water fish so they would be no good for our climate if kept outside. I had also heard of using trout but as the only fish I have ever kept are pond goldfish and a couple of koi and knowing that they are carp just wondered if you could eat them a 2lb gold fish sound ok to me and lets admit it they are cheap and most people have kept goldfish at some point. Also I had a friend who had a small holding some year's ago and kept two gold fish in all the water containers that the animal's drank out off the thought behind this was that as long as the fish lived the water was fine to drink if the fish died they would change the water, in the six years of knowing them the fish never died and they were left to themselves which is why I thought of goldfish in the butts :D
