pvc pipe knife sheath

Post by piglet »

I was rummaging through cupboards and came across a couple of my old knives from when I worked on the farm.

I always favoured boot style knives worn on the thigh, but unfortunately the sheath's for each of the knives seemed to have vanished, so I decided to have a go at making new ones using pvc pipe.

It wasn't that difficult taking about 30 minutes. This is a one piece sheath.

Firstly, I cut a length of pipe equal to my desired total sheath length.... and then some.

Then, allowing for some extra spare length at the bottom, I cut about half way through the pipe to give myself the blade sheath length.

Then, I cut down the centre of the other/top section of pipe and applied heat so that I could flatten the section to prevent it blocking the next stage.

Then, I heated and flattened the blade sheath section, and whilst still malleable inserted the knife blade in to the sheath to prevent it flattening too far.

Then, I returned to the top section and cut to a pre-desired format and filed to shape.
Next, I again applied heat to this section, and whist malleable shaped it around the knife handle, to act as a clip

Finally I cut and shaped the bottom of the sheath and drilled and filed holes for lanyard. I also added a belt loop from an old piece of strapping I found.

Although I am not entirely happy with it, I don't think my first attempt turned out too bad?

Nice job, i will have a go at this as i have a Hultifours heavy duty and i dont like the sheath it came with, the belt clip is just too small.

Look much neater than the one I made from leather to my knife, though my knife is a very awkward shape for putting in a sheath

That's good thinking, and well executed. I will also give this a try I think. I have a hatchet that the sheath broke down over time, so I may try to adapt it to work with that. Thanks!
Stoke me a clipper, I'll be back for Christmas
