 honestly who knows,

The way I look at survival and preparedness you start with the most likely scenarios, job loss, short term disruptions,
so you sock up on food and other essentials, start to get out of debt, put money away.

Move out to stuff like economic depression, serious pandemic, prolonged civil conflict,
this is where you start analysing your wider lifestyle, where you live, how you earn a living, moving towards being more self-sufficiency.

The problem I see within the 'prepper community' is we tend to want to skip right forward to 'TEOTWAWKI'
Which is a bit like starting to box and getting straight into the ring with Joe Calzaghe or trying to build a house from the roof down.
Dead right our kid!
I used to do all that TEOTWAWKI shite. Food preps, cash and general resources like the holding and animals is where it is at. And it came to pass.

REDUNDANCY!!! Ok I am back in work now, but I have tax all over the place, and I am probably a thousand quid out up to now-that is the real prep!
Today my Son -in-law lost his job. On Monday Jan finds out if she loses hers.

At THIS point in Human History, these are the REAL problems.
In three words I can sum up everything I have learned about life: It goes on.

Covid 19: After that level of weirdness ,any situation is certainly possible.

You can see why some of those people in America just go live off what they can hunt in the mountains, takes away all the stresses of modern day life!
First in, last out.

Area 2, when SHTF that's when you'll care about surviving.

my opinions on this matter

waves of people will eventually make there way out of the cities however most roads will be completely piled up with vehicles so the chances of gangs coming to sub urban environments well equipped with vehicles is not very likely in my opinion they will venture out in small packs on foot or even bicycle (excellent form of survival transport) i do not think large gangs will form because humans in that situation tend to think in a manner of self preservation and paranoia

living in a sub urban environment within a 5 mile radius of a major city this problem has ran through my mind many times

i think and this may be a controversial decision but holding up in your fortress and carrying out regular covert scouting missions to observe traffic/human flow out of the city
woodlands will probably be busy as a lot of people tend to have the same idea so unless you are very familiar with your local woodland and are very confident in yourself and have superior means of defending yourself/familly/friends i would avoid these areas

a very bold strategy i am considering attempting is to actually enter the city for shelter/supplies this tactic will depend on the cause of disaster

but even with looting parties there will still be stones unturned and plenty of rodent pigeon and various other animal to feed on if necessary

too far from civilization can cause problems very few people realize how difficult it is to live off of the land through all 4 seasons and most will probably end up hunting the local game into nothingness and run out of food

to close to civilization and you could risk the total anarchy and break down straight from the get go

i believe that staying within a radius of 5-15 miles of a major city is your best bet for a large concentration of supplies you just have to know how to stay on the down-low eventually city migrants and thugs will fade on further out into the country due to lack of experience and constantly looking for packaged supplies instead of creating there own

i could be wrong but at least im trying

So if every one is heading out of a city that means the city will be empty. Head for the city as a prepper there will be lots of resources that the common person would not notice and if they had notice them will not know what to do with them and you have the added bonus of lots of ready made shelter to chose from

I wasnt even interested in prepping until i had kids, i left the army sold up and now i live on a small island with 12 months prepping stores, and 7 acres this enables me to plan longer term, planting tatties, neaps, onions, etc..if tshtf i am in the best place to survive, if it doesnt hit the fan at least the kids grow up free and safe. but the best thing of all is the people i share the island with, winner winner chicken dinner,

I think one thing that is always overlooked is the fact that the countryside(at least around here) is owned and maintained. This vision people have of bugging out to some secluded wood and living off the land is flawed in my opinion. Do you really think the yokels are going to sit back and let people just wander around shooting animals, pillaging crops etc. Most small villages are still a fairly close knit community that stick together when they need too and Im sure would defend their lives and land vigorously. Also a major thing to consider is that most farmers and a fair percentage of the locals will already be armed with shotguns or firearms for sport or hunting, Will know the land better than you and would be as determined as you to survive. Personally Im with jansman and others, Having lost our home and everything at one point and coming very close to living rough with 4 children I tend to prep for more practical reasons, If the SHTF just remember Im a yokel.....

Hmm, I wasn't thinking of bumming it in the woods but being remote-ish in a small house with a wood burner. Therefore I am on my own land. Practically though where you are at the moment is likely where you will be forced to exist. Wherever you are the probability of problems with other in the same position after the same resources will be the same. It would be interesting to know if someone has detailed what resources one needs in the various living scenarios like In Town (flat or larger house), Semi-rural, Rural, etc. Strategy for interacting with neighbors would be useful as well as in the last resort they may not be friendly neighbors at all!

My Plan is to move away from the town to a village and get involved in the community before SHTF. Biggest stumbling block I have is the townie I married who does not have a clue and hates villages as they all want to know your business
