LIFESTRAWS

Post by Laziji »

Hi there

I recenty bought some 'Life Straw Personal Water Filters' for my bug out

However I heard that they can't completely clean your water
Instead you should use KMnO4 to do a complete clean up

Can someone help me out and tell me how I can combine the two things :?: :? :?:
The Lifestraw seems very self contained and I dont want to break it open
Should I knock up my own secondary filter with the KMnO4 or just add it to the water source?
KMnO4 sounds kinda toxic

Cheers

Observe the locals - one time I was boiling, filtering and chemically treating water when a local came down filled his bucket , drank a litre there and then and walked off- lesson learnt.

I use a multi layer system, depending on my location

1. Take from flowing water where possible.

Clear and debris free - if not Milbank bag it, then boil it.

2. Lifesaver bottle for long trips: http://www.lifesaversystems.com/lifesav ... ver-bottle

3. Aquamira Frontier Pro for emergency fallback: http://www.aquamira.com/military/fronti ... ter-system

4. Water Purification tablets from Military Ration packs.

These 4 main methods will cover most eventualities I have encountered.

Thanks for the reply Pseudonym
I know what you mean about watch the locals. I was in Mongolia and they just drunk straight out of the lake

The Aquamira looks ace. I may well order one to add to the bug out preps so cheers for the link

Trouble is I already have these lifestraws.
Any ideas how I can use the KMnO4?
It sounds like a serious chemical I'll be adding to my water supply

I personally wouldn't worry about using Pot Permang on your water supplies.

With your straws any reasonable water source will be ok.

For a home set up I'd be looking at a Berkley Water filter, but those I've listed cover my needs for the moment.

Why would you need to add a chemical treatment if you're using a 20 nanometre filter ?
Could you tell us where you heard/read that please, mate
I haven't heard anyone suggesting PP for drinking water for a few years. Iodine, maybe (but thats bad for some medical conditions and pregnant women...If I remember right). If you feel you have to use a chemical treatment, one of the Chlorine based ones is probably better

How big (or rather how small) are the nasty bugs anyway ?

I need to find a purifier for use around here....Lots of agri-chemicals in my local 'found' water and just killing or removing the bugs won't deal with the contaminants

Local folks are hardened to local bugs....You won't be and dysentery is nobodies favorate holiday companion........ But its your GI tract, you get to choose how to treat it ;)

I would not worry lifestraws can purify up to 700 litres of water each, they were tested on the gadget show a few months back by one of the presenters drinking water from a portaloo !!
