CS disperses quite quickly and only likely to affect you if your very nearby. So unless you one of these rioting its not going to be any use. Besides CS canisters wouldn't be used on the mainland for rioting. It's more likely to be Attenuating energy projectile (baton rounds) and/or water cannon.

Short answer. Yes.Pestweazle wrote:
Does anyone think getting one is a waste of time/money?
Longer answer. If all you're trying to protect against is riot gas, don't be where the riot is (good advice even if theres no gas being used).
If its military grade chemical agents, radio-active crap or weaponised biological nasties you'll need more then just a respirator.
Other stuff (dust as with 9/11 for example) can be dealt with with an N-95 (or better rated) mask and goggles
You need a load of training (including 'live' practice) and its not a 'buy it once' kind of gig....I don't know what kind of replacement kit you'd need or how often you'd need to do it. All this adds up to serious money for a very limited chance of payback.
This is a subject that comes up on another board I go on (a US based one), the consensus on there is you're more likely to need full body armour (Level III with SAPI plates .....Whatever the hell that means) and a full set of 'Battle Rattle'
Still, its your preps and your money....Buy the kit that you want

first of all i was a squaddie and served my countryjudicatr wrote:Hello Poppypiesdad... respectfully I must disagree with your assessment that because a "squaddy" can do it mustn't be that difficult. Frankly that's a little bit of an insult to "squaddies" everywhere. But lets move forward on the premise that a "squaddy" is a low IQ bumpkin. The reason its not difficult for them is because all the difficult questions have been answered for the by their officers, NCOs, or specialists. Questions like:poppypiesdad wrote:British army issue S10 respirator should cover most of the N B C stuff , they used cs gas in the gas chamber as part of you yearly qualifications , sizing is pretty straight forward as it has to be squaddy proof .
Ain't that difficult
And Avon make the kit for the army

Is the respirator properly fitted? How do we know? Was a qualitative or quantitative test used?
Is the respirator in good working order? How do you know? How do you fix it? How do you maintain it?
Is the cartridge appropriate for the agent? How do you know? Has it been used before? When should it be changed? Is it expired? How do you tell?
When do you don your gear when do you doff it? How do you know? Is additional PPE required? What PPE is required?
When where and how do you contaminate? Etc...
CS is one thing. But Sarin or VX is something else. I think its a bit irresponsible leave folks with the impression that just because they buy a piece of kit and they think they know how to use it means they really do and are safe when they use it. You have to do a some research and get some training.
Its important to remember, I think, that a little knowledge is sometimes a dangerous thing. After all you wouldn't give someone a firearm and a few cartridges, show them how to load and unload it then consider them "combat ready" would you?
Thanks for letting me throw in my two cents...
secondly fit test , remove cannister and suck , if it seals it fits, if you can suck air in it doesnt , all the quantitive test and oxygen you need
thirdly , baby wipes clean it , and if you do your simple fit test and it lets in air it aint working
forthly emm simple theres a BBD on them duh!
Fifthy , Pick up a survive to fight
if its sarin or vx , your DEAD
After all you wouldn't give someone a firearm and a few cartridges, show them how to load and unload it then consider them "combat ready" would you? well thats what the good old US of A does and kills innocents every day
And no nobody asked you for your opinion.
Dont you just love the Americans............. nope

Re: Riot control agents and respirators.
Hello Poppypiesdad, Sarin and VX are quite survivable. In fact, when I was in training we were exposed to live VX just to prove the PPE and mask combination worked, if properly used. And your right going through the check and clearance drills to test for faults in your mask is important. Many time they are correctable, if you know how... Anyway perhaps we should agree to disagree on this subject.
But before I go let me say that your nation no doubt thanks you for your service. In that regard we are in agreement and can find some common ground. I'm sorry you dislike Americans. Most Americans really like the British - alas is there anything so sad as unrequited love. Indeed the times I've visited and trained with your countrymen I've always found them to be pleasant, articulate, and reasonable - of course there are always exceptions. And as for opinion... Opinion, I think we can agree, is the life blood of any forum. Thanks for letting me voice mine, I've enjoyed interacting on this forum because of the interesting variety of opinions and perspectives. Take care and stay safe.
