I've been looking for a small tablet or smart phone for some time now to replace my iphone 3, I want something that works after being bumped about when I'm traveling or I could use as a sat nav on the bike.
I want a maps feature, ability to connect to the web for mail etc.
All the ones I've looked at have come up short in some way - mostly they could not be considered robust unless they are stuck in a bulky case, but now I think I've found the ideal :the earl..

only trouble is I'll have to wait for the end of the year for the european version.
anyone else have suggestions?

It's tricky to get a device that is all things and reliable. Does it have to be 1 unit?

Hmmm. The thing is, smartphones do everything to an ok standard, but if you really need a particular function it's often best to get a dedicated device.
For example, my Samsung S2 phone has an impressive 8MP camera, but I still take my proper Canon camera when I travel as it takes a better picture, is amazing in low light, can change shutter speed, very long battery life etc. etc.
I go walking in the mountains up north and in Scotland (actually got back last week from a trip). Although my phone does GPS and can provide an accurate OS grid reference, I still rely on my indestructible Garmin unit, which is impact and waterproof. While Google Maps is fine when I'm getting around London, there's no way I'd rely on the poor daylight readability, poor battery life and unreliability of a smartphone when I'm out in the middle of nowhere and possibly my life depends on it.
Personally I'd get a normal smartphone (I love my Samsung Galaxy/Android phone), AND a proper, dedicated GPS/mapping device, like a Garmin etc. I really don't think smartphones are built for rugger outdoor use.

I would whole heartedly recommend the Samsung Galaxy S2 as I've put mine through some serious grief over the years including being in the same pocket as me leatherman. lol Also be dropped and thrown here n there n still works fine. The gps can be slow but planning for tech out/shtf I use an app called Backcountry navigator where all OS maps that can be downloaded and used offline. I also use it as it'll take a 32gb micro sd card that I use for many images and books on varying subject if bored of needed anywhere.
