I have to think of general safety and make my decisions carefully. I always do this by discussion with the stallholder.
I have enough training to recognize dangerously unhinged persons and remove them if they start to misbehave.
The knife was placed in a toolbox where it could be used for teaching purposes if anyone had asked.
The problem was that it was on open display where it was not under close control of the stallholder (in his hand).

I am also old enough to be a nanny. :D

No problem. An old military background means I can be a bit short when writing...it was encouraged.
Mostly I make decisions on how things look at the time. As a mum, I got good at seeing where my own kids could get into trouble. As a Guider, those sorts of problems were multiplied by the number of kids in my care. That and some experience in Psychiatric nursing made me a bit more aware. Nowadays I am a well-intentioned battleaxe with a thing about bringing crafting skills to as many people as possible...hence the regular craft fairs I run and also the classes I am about to run this winter. I really am a prepper with the stress on skills.

I do understand your concerns though. The last thing I am is the sort of pompous prig who knows nothing and tries to control things he knows nothing about. With me, it's all about safety and you are more likely to get a cup of tea than a hard time...as was said in "Roadhouse" by Mr Swayze, "Be nice!"
