Just came across this useful idea for a pre filter for dirty water. a Tampon and a 2 litre soft drink bottle.
1. remove the bottom of the Drink bottle to make a container
2. fluff up a tampon and insert into the bottle neck.
3. fill with Turbid water and let it drain

Re: turbidity Water filter
Another way of taking turbidity out of water without the need for a filter (tho. you will need to boil the water afterwards) is the 'three bottle' or '3 jar' method... altho. 4 or 5 containers could be used.
Essentially turbid water is stored for 1 day in vessel ONE, then siphoned into vessel TWO on day two and stored for a day - while the gash water at the bottom of vessel ONE is tipped out and the container refilled with new turbid water. Basically, each day settling water is moved onwards to the next container in the vessel chain.
