(1) how would I of coped with the pain situation (2) how would I have carried out the euthanasia humanely.
It's sad and hard but 1 unless you're a vet and have the medication you simply can't and 2 again if you don't have the drugs and for dogs it's a morphine overdose, then it's the quicker it is the more humane, that could mean a shotgun or at worst a sharp knife, I don't know if I could do it to be honest :( but it is what it is.
I have a strategy, it's not written in stone, nor can it be, this scenario has too many variables, everything about it depends on those variables, being specific is not possible.

Awwww, I'm sorry about your dog, he was clearly much loved and I think you will miss him a lot. As for prepping for this kind of thing, well, it happens. And we will cope with it when it does, whatever the state of civilisation.

arnieh wrote:Something to think about when planning your preps, today I have had to have my 13 year old Springer Spaniel put down he was on long term medication for arthritis and then developed a problem with his central nervous system, I had to stop the medication for the Arthritis as the two lots of medication do not mix. This action although planned by the Vet brought the Arthritis to the fore and he was in extreme pain so much so that I slept with him on the kitchen floor all last night. I am only glad that this happened now and not in a SHTF situation, (1) how would I of coped with the pain situation (2) how would I have carried out the euthanasia humanely. Most of us prep for our pets but are we prepping for this sort of situation? As I said something to think about.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

arnieh, I'm so sorry to hear about your springer. I think you'll be glad you spent that night on the kitchen floor with him, in years to come. Pseudonym, thanks for putting up the Rainbow Bridge ... I wouldn't have dared to put it on this forum, but I'm pleased you did. My cats are waiting for me there.

As for my own preps, more weeding (of the same spot!) in the garden, plus getting rid of crusted, be-mossed earth, horrible stuff. Put aside the big rocks to be used elsewhere, filled up the holes with soil, and chucked an initial layer of bark chippings over the whole thing. It needs more, but thats all - now it can sit there over the winter doing its thing.

Also went blackberrying - there was a rustling in the patch I was picking from, and I thought it was a bird, but then a cat popped out about two feet away from me. No mice for that moggy today! It wasn't pleased with me

Arnieh so sorry for your loss, my comments were stating the obvious, I too have lost loved pets, It simply does not get any easier, but when the pain subsides enough, don't think No more, another pet will never fill those paw prints so to speak, but it will go a long way to filling that hole in your heart, journey well Floyd.

Sorry about your dog. When I was a younger man, I had to put down my Lurcher, Sid. He was the best working dog I ever owned. Broke my heart.
I understand your loss.

Today I swept the chimneys. Soddin' hard work. I have decided that next year I will pay a sweep. Been doing this for years. Gettin' too old.
After lunch I set a 40 pint bitter kit, and a 30 bottle Merlot going. Also bottled 40 pints of bitter. Made another batch of marrow chutney, and started making a new gate for the yard.
Think I will have a sit down now.
