Welsh onions are clumping perennials ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allium_ fistulosum ... I've just found them online, getting ready to get some planted next year.

Totally agree about how crucial they are :D In the meantime - chives!

I grow a good big bed of Welsh Onions. Have done for years, they are a good standby. I read , years ago , that gardeners in WW2 who had these overcame the onion shortages.
Of course, you can also store tins of 'Eazy Onions' as prescribed by Delia Smith.
