A bow an arrow will always be more useful for procuring food than in self defense. However, it does have merits for self defense. Not to actually use but to have about you as a psychological deterrent. If we were to have another situation like with the London Riots with gangs roaming the streets, even a group of thugs armed with baseball bats will think twice about approaching a single guy with a bow. I hope I never find myself in a situation like that though.

Here here ! The more a thread leans toward the possibilities of finding ourselves in such situations, the clearer the severity of the possibility becomes, and that is if things ever get that bad, few would come out unscathed.I hope I never find myself in a situation like that though.
I keep saying this about all kinds of weapons, join a club go and do it legally and responsibly, that way you are making friends, finding people who are like minded, and having fun doing something which could be useful to you in that ever so unlikely scenario you most fear, I've found the Archery ( be it recurve compound, crossbow longbow) V Shooting V Catapult conversations a mute point , sure you get your specialist who can throw a coin and hit it with a catapult, or put an arrow inside another arrow at 50 yards, but I am finding it all fun and know folk who are happy "playing" with any weapon "toy" which shoots something some who have the right circumstances do it all from deer stalking to everything else we're talking about, it's all fun so why choose between them. I have the same trouble when someone says "what's your favourite colour" I am just not that biased except perhaps I am not too keen on pink especially on a man
I have a strategy, it's not written in stone, nor can it be, this scenario has too many variables, everything about it depends on those variables, being specific is not possible.

Re: Good Ol' Bow n Arrow?
done a lot of research when i bought my crossbow, tried to join clubs but found most archery clubs do not allow crossbows they are quite frowned apon by 90% of clubs,i found ask a local land owner permission to shoot or if you have a large enough garden you can do it LEGALLY AND RESPONSIBLY on private land so don't let people misinform on this, its illegal to hunt with a bow not to shoot at targets on private land,
will give you a breakdown on the costs of joining a archery club this is the average price from 4 local clubs in my area so it will differ from area to area of which none allowed crossbows or catapults they one club actully sniggered when i mentioned about catapults
yearly membership £120 per year
beginners course £40 for a just over a hour but there for 3 hours
archery uk membership £39 which is not compulsory but they push it all the time
i have never found a club yet where you can fire catapults ,bow and arrow and crossbows all in the same place so if you can found one join up

I have not all at the same time though But it's a fullbore club so guns are the main thing, but archery and airguns can be used too and we had a go with our gamekeeper catapults, they're thinking about buying a mould for catapult ammo now.i have never found a club yet where you can fire catapults ,bow and arrow and crossbows all in the same place so if you can found one join up

i said at the same place not time , i don't think joining a gun club to fire a catapult or do archery will be any benefit or cost to anyone as its main feature is a gun club
Re: Good Ol' Bow n Arrow?
I will be honest we wanted something to do, the full bore guns are easier for my disabled daughter to fire or load than even my old air rifles, I don't want to miss my own point which was doing things with others forges connections, and that anything that fires something can be great family fun, it was hearing how much fun the shooters who reside here were having that made me go looking for a club, it's all too easy to talk yourself out of it but go for it because the good ol bow and arrow as with everything else is more use if you're practiced, and more fun done in companyi said at the same place not time , i don't think joining a gun club to fire a catapult or do archery will be any benefit or cost to anyone as its main feature is a gun club

i can see exactly where you are coming from and i take my hat off to you for taking your daughter to learn how to shoot, my point is its difficult to join a club if i like i said for instance you have a crossbow or you don't want the cost of joining a club its not cheap and when you don't really need too,as i said before your perfectly legal to fire a crossbow do archery or fire catapults on private land so have a go there before the expense of a club.i think we are going off thread slightly as this was about bows and arrows not shotguns
Re: Good Ol' Bow n Arrow?
Another idea, would be to chat in the local shop and see if you can form a crossbow club with other people who have bought one, an archery club near Plymouth uses a sports centre's field and hall in winter, (my daughter's 25 soon and a better shot than me and my son, she's better with a bow too but injures herself far too easily to do it regularly, she has EDS) I think there's a bit of a stigma against crossbows and even compound bows from the recurve purists, so they are stuck between worlds these days, until enough that have them do something about it for themselves
