Mylar question
Brief question about Mylar bags. Can you store and seal wet food product for example baked beans while still using an oxygen absorber? Cheers guys and gals

Re: Mylar question
Beards-beat-guns,
No, to my knowledge there' wouldn't be a way to store wet food AND use oxygen absorbers, no.
Can I ask why you'd want to do this anyway, when you can by dried beans and make up your own when needed? (I guess you're going to say 'for convenience'?)
Do you already have Mylar bags; and if not, are you looking for the cheapest place to buy them, as they vary in price tremendously. I know a first rate source, and incredibly 'cheap', who buys in bulk from the States and applies a really marginal mark-up.
Anyway, do let me know.

Re: Mylar question
The reasoning behind O2 absorbers is to prevent spoilage by creating an anoxic enviroment (CO or nitrogen flooding works the same way)
Baked Beans etc are canned/tinned/bottled, they are heated in a sealed container to Pasturisation temperatures.
Are you re-packing bought tinned food or trying to pack your own ?
Now I'm wondering...... Can you boil a mylar bag ?

You're correct in what you say, ForgeCorvus. I didn't want to elaborate, as I assumed Beards-Beat-Guns would know this, though maybe I'm wrong.ForgeCorvus wrote:The reasoning behind O2 absorbers is to prevent spoilage by creating an anoxic enviroment (CO or nitrogen flooding works the same way)

On the subject of boiling Mylar bags, while I can't categorically state that you can, as I havent seen it stated anyway, BUT I'd be willing to bet they can be. Remember, you have to put your iron to maximum temperature to get the plastic hot enough to melt sufficient to 'weld' a seal. This is way over boiling point, but still the plastic isn't liquefied. You could always try it if in doubt.

Re: Mylar question
I don't know if BBGs knows the why or how of O2 absorbers or not, I know I didn't until recently.
I try not to answer questions on the interwebz as a simple yes/no because quite often someone (maybe the OP, maybe a lurker) will ask the Why.*
I'm thinking about DIY retort pouches.........

I have seen it done on YouTube.. but don't ask for link because I can't find itForgeCorvus wrote:Now I'm wondering...... Can you boil a mylar bag ?
However, you put boiling water in mountain house mylar bags, as above it can take the heat of an iron of full and MRE's use mylar and the little packs inside get hotter than boiling point...
I guess though you would need to check the quality of the bags as many in the UK seem to be sub-par.
