Re: First Knife
I would recommend the following Highlander knife. I personally own it. It is cheap for the quality of knife it is. It fits brilliantly in its sheath. The belt loop is very strong. The knife itself is strong and feels great in the hand. The tang runs the full length of the handle and the handle itself doesn't undulate so you can adjust your grip. It also has a useful firesteel too. This is honestly an amazing knife.

Re: First Knife
We have a load of Mora knives for the scouts to use can't remember which one though but they get a fair bit abuse and still keep a good sharp blade. I'm sure we went for stainless blades over carbon as they are lower maintenance but loose their sharpness faster. Actually need to get myself a new knife maybe drop hints to swmbo for Xmas
Not planning for the end of the world just to survive till normality resumes, while sticking to the scout moto be prepared!
Still considering do I want to survive the end of the world or deck chair on the front lawn with a cold beer?

Re: First Knife
Got to be Mora or Hultafors (think I got that right) tough, sharp, easy to keep sharp and cheap. A knife is a tool, NOT a showpiece. As a Butcher, I value a sharp blade, and we REALLY use 'em. They look like hell but they serve a purpose. For a prepper, the above are ideal. If it is a folder, Opinel and/or Swiss Army Knife.

Re: First Knife
Dave, I wouldn't buy that knife.
I've never understood coating a blade
The handle is far too shaped (this limits the grip options)
Tanto points are great for stabbing
What does anyone need a glass-breaker for really
For a first knife I'd go for one of these
http://www.ffx.co.uk/tools/product/HUL% ... nife%20HVK
or this if I wanted stainless
http://www.ffx.co.uk/tools/product/HUL% ... less%20RTR
Or this if I wanted something beefier
http://www.ffx.co.uk/tools/product/HUL% ... -duty%20GK
If you kill them you've lost less then a tenner....And at that price you can buy spares

Re: First Knife
I got an Opinel no. 7 recently. Handy little knife and I've ended up using it more than I though I would. Also pretty cheap - £9 I paid in a shop.
Re: First Knife
DavePR,
I'm not sure if you are already suited with your knife, but if not, then maybe I can put my suggestion in too:
Someone else mentioned the Mora (Swedish)on here, and I'd definitely second that. The one that's particularly good, is the Heavy Duty 'Companion' knife, which has a longer tang than standard, a thicker blade (high carbon steel) and also a slightly larger handle than the standard version. It naturally weighs a bit more too, but is VERY comfortable to hold with it's rubberised finish, and it sits well in the included tough plastic sheath. I just would rely on this and also my Chris Caine Companion Survival-sheath knife too.
The Mora is a bargain at around £12.95, it really is. It's literally a couple of quid more than the standard knife, which in itself is decent; but the HD version is sturdier and more satisfying to use, especially if you have larger hands, as I do. You really don't need to spend several hundred pounds on a knife!
Hope that helps in some way.
