tin food and dry food storage ?

Post by aardys »

im sure its been done to death , but ,, just how long will tinned food last ?
and also dry food like pasta , noodles etc , I'm talking about the way they come in the supermarket bag and not in a ziplock with deoxygenator
do we just follow the use by date ?

The basic rule is keep it in the dark , dry and cool, and your packets and tins will last to use by date. Make sure you are constantly rotating by eating and you won't go wrong.

tinned food will last to its used by date !!!what are you joking ? , use the forum search , tinned food will last years past its use by date as long as the tins are not damaged and air tight , tins have been eaten 20, 30, 40 years after there use by dates and are perfectly safe . rice , sugar and honey to name but 3 will last indefinitely if kept air tight

I bl**dy hope tins last past their use by date lol, I have full intention to be eating my tinned food years past the "date" ( and have eaten plenty in the past ) My rule is no delivered shopping, I always hand pick my tins to make sure there are no dents, rust marks etc. We have an older property with a north facing pantry, We have shelved it out, Covered the window to prevent sun damage and to keep temperature as low/ stable as possible. Jansman is of course correct, We rotate our tins and and any dented tins go to the front for consumption first. All our dried foods are mylar bagged with oxygen absorbers and stored in cupboards. So when Im an older git than I am now and on £1.50 per week state pension at least I will be able to eat my out of date beans :D .

For what it is worth, here are the results of my 'experiments':

Also, I opened a jar of Tahini (encased in oil) with a sell by date of 2007 - still edible.
