Apple Pressing

Post by preppingsu »

I know that some of you have presses and make your own apple juice or cider but this is a new thing for us so I thought I would share our experiences.

We were lucky to win this press back in the spring

We have a very large brambly apple tree and managed to acquire apples from an acquaintance of OH and from a community orchard on the public hill by us.

These are just a few of the apples and pears we collected.

First washed and quartered then crushed. Our homemade crusher - a bucket and a block of wood with plenty of muscle!

We fixed the press to the kitchen table and the juice container was placed on a chair.

Added the crushed apple, then all the bits ready to press and off we went.

We worked for approx 4 hours and made approx 25 litres of juice.

The juice will be stood for a couple of days to let then sediment settle and then we will decant into bottles.
We will pasteurise so the juice will keep for longer.

Apologies if the photos are large - I'm posting from the iPad and it has a nasty habit of doing that!

You can't go wrong with the Vigo press, they are expensive but will last a lifetime. We are about to get one of the biggies with boards and cloth, 36 ltr I think? We planted an orchard with 46 Apple trees mainly juicers, 12 pear varieties and 8 plum varieties with the intention of producing all our own bottled juices and a bit to sell.
