Hi,
Sorry if this has been discussed at length, searched but couldn't find the answer.
Thinking of getting a CB, but not very knowledgeable in this arena.
Do these hand held radios perform the same task as a CB?

They seem a bargain for a new bit of kit, if they are legal and do the same job. Or should I stick to an old car mounted CB?
Thanks
Andy

Re: Hand held dual band CB?
Hey fella, sorry but they wont communicate with a cb. Im looking to get one of these at the moment and looked into whether it would talk to my cb mounted in the jeep... it wont.
The units you list are hand held ham radios and I'm looking to get into this aspect of comms but you need to undertake a course to gain a licence to use.
Hope that helps... im not an expert mind

Both the items you have linked to are vhf/uhf radios and will not work with a CB. They will work on the amateur Radio 144Mhz and 432 Mhz bands as well as pmr 446. the use on PMR 446 would be illegal as these radio exceed the power output frequecies are:

Re: Hand held dual band CB?
Thanks everyone. I had a feeling that was the case, will leave those alone.
I will look out for a cheap second hand CB set or consider the £40 one in Maplin:

Anyone know if it is a decent beginners set?
Thanks again

The Midland 42 is a cracker. Does both AM and FM and International bands. It also works as a handheld or incar unit. New they are pricey at about £100 but come up on Fleebay for half that from time to time.

I have to agree I have one of these Midland 42's and although all you get is a few truckers who grunt copy at you I think its ideal. With the rechargeable handheld option (need AA batteries) and the cigarette lighter adapter its great.. get a magmount antenna if your going to use it in the car!

This one just screws in.. excellent starter kit!
Also if you are looking for more indepth info setting up etc.. the guys at thunderpole will be happy to help.
If you do go for the Maplin one I would recommend you upgrade for the tenner to the one with Euro Settings built in and Antenna Kit..
