blue barrels and rice storage

Post by bob the builder »

I'm thinking of getting one or two of these big blue water tight barrels you know the ones with the black lids. My thinking is that white rice has a huge life span if kept properly so thinking fill them up with rice and use 1 as needed and keep other for when the zombies come and refill when empty and rotate. Thinking use some of the smaller barrels the 30ltr size.

I know using Mylar bags would be better but thinking just pour the rice straight in as I want to be able to use it with less prep and easy of use.

Also read you can put it in cleaned out soft drinks bottles which would be easier to store and keep track of but more time consuming to fill also cheaper.

Opinions please

We use the 30 ltr barrels, they take a full sack "20kg" I think of rice and a bit to spare.
Slightly off topic, but we get these sacks of basmati which really are top quality from bookers at about £18 each.

Do it! I have used those barrels for years. Rice and pasta, in original packaging. No problems. No need for all that mylar/ oxygen absorbers. Dry, dark, cool. Job done. ;)

I got myself a couple of 30L barrels as you describe, added a few oxy absorbers but then it occurred to me that all I was after was an airtight container....so this said, drinks bottles, petrol cans (preferably one that hasn't had petrol in it ! Lol) normal 5 gallon water drums, anything that is clean, robust & seals the oxygen out. The rice doesn't need to be in a bag, it just needs to be dry & oxygen free to preserve it.

Just filled the last of my 30 ltr barrels with wheat so I need to buy some more, last time I got them on a pallet from Ireland through eBay, but can't find the supplier. Other sellers on there are charging stupid amounts for them.

If you store dry food outside of original package, the container needs to be food grade, to avoid plasticiser leaching into the foodstuff.
