Hi from a new prepper

Post by scruffypaul »

Hi everyone

I've been reading some of this forum and other preparedness sites for a few months now. I thought it would be good to join this one and enter the discussions!

Let me introduce myself. I'm Paul, 26, from the East Midlands. I graduated with a history degree a few years ago but haven't yet found a graduate-level job. But I enjoy the clerical/office job I have at the moment, and it just about pays my bills. I guess I started thinking about preparedness and resilience seriously a few months ago, finding some material on the internet and becoming gradually more pessimistic about the longevity of "the system" from a few things in the news. When I was younger I was in the Scouts, and I go hiking and camping every year, so I had a few basic skills already but realized I still have a lot to learn.

I guess I am prepping with a few goals and scenarios in mind. While I suppose there is always the possibility of a big, horrible TEOTWAWKI event, at the moment I want to be ready for things like unexpected unemployment or financial trouble (Basically I can be my own food bank for a month or so, or my supplies can ease cash flow issues, or simply let me save by buying in bulk), blackouts (I rent so there are limitations - can't put solar on the roof; don't want to keep petrol in the shed, basically the furthest I've got with this is candles and batteries), water issues (have a filter and a regularly rotated stock of bottled water) or temporary cessation of services etc. I'd like to be able to expand my skills and one of the things I'm considering for next year is growing food - either finding an allotment or having some growbags/planters in the garden (again, I rent so pots and planters are okay but digging up the lawn or patio might be frowned upon). Also expanding my skills by learning how to do jams/pickles/stored food with the stuff I grow.

At the same time I guess I'm also looking out for my next step up the employment ladder, and hopefully a better financial situation, though it's not the be all and end all.

Anyway, that's a little about me.
