I was in B&Q's plumbing section yesterday and noticed they have some low cost 50mm diameter guttering downpipes so this week I'm planning on building the first flush rainwater filter system that I've been designing in my head for ages.

When you get your plan(s) in place, can you post them please - I have been thinking about something similar, to put rainwater to use, in the veg. plot.

Yes of course, no problem. I'm planning around available space and height. I was thinking I would use 50mm pipe throughout with a 40mm ping pong ball as the float. I'm considering this may not be a large enough volume of water ( only 2 litres in a metre long filter) to be an effective flush so I'm now thinking I may use the 50mm pipe for the rain collection but switch to a 100mm soil pipe for the filter which will contain 7.8 litres in the same length of pipe.

He's using two 4" soil pipes.

I am going to use brewer's mesh on the downpipe to filter out the larger bits of leaves and bird poop before entering the first flush.

Just finished the last of the apple pressing, bottling and pasteurising.

Decided that I need to stop jam making so the last lot today was Jumbleberry Jam (a mix of raspberry, blackberry and loganberry - all I had in the freezer).

Had a delivery of 5 gallon buckets, so going to knock up a simple off the grid laundry kit with two of them. Also start to make up 72 hour emergency buckets to stash at work / girlfriends work (will take a bit of sweet talk to convince the non believer).

off to do some edible plant recy practice, had trouble lighting a fire yesterday in the rain so will upgrade my survival belt with waterproof tinder (string coated in wax).
upgrading go bag to winter contence, will take jacket out and replace with extra food and shemag.

I am not sure wether anyone will see the logic behind my thinking or if perhaps anyone else on here has thought of the same thing, but

Lying on my sofa last night watching documentary on weird weather and thinking about ways of fortifying my home in an emergency situation. I live on a ground floor apartment, open plan kitchen and living room then 1 bedroom and one bathroom. so 3 fairly large windows and one small one in the bathroom.

I started thinking would it be beneficial for me to get MDF or plywood boards cut to fit my windows from the inside. Then when there are cases of extreme storms in the future, civil unrest, or any case of WSHTF, I would erect the boards into my windows to prtoect me from smashed windows, block out light that i may be emitting from prepping supplies i have stored perhaps insulating my apartment aswell???

At last I have completed the conversion of our store shed, its fully insulated with 100mm closed foam insulation in the roof and walls, 50mm in the door and all lined with 8mm ply boards, it has mains electricity and a strip light. At the moment the outside area has halogen lighting linked with a heat/motion sensor, I have yet to alarm the area and sheds. The only thing I have to complete is the shelving and install the freezer and then we can transfer our preps and get our selves organized.

The store shed is now complete we have moved our stores over, we have around 2 months worth at the moment, we also have 14 x 25 litre containers of drinking water (350litres in all) the freezer is in and we have started to stock it, I have a night/day security camera system coming tomorrow to cover the bungalow, store shed and workshop, things have started moving forwards at last. Has any one had any experience of using swimming pool shock to clean water up for use in the house i.e. drinking/cooking etc.?

Pool-shock (Sodium Hypochlorite) is a fairly strong chemical.
Its good and stable in long term storage though, in a way that liquid bleach is not.

To give you an idea, liquid bleach is roughly 5% Sodium Hypochlorite and 95% water. You only need a few drops to sanitise a couple of litres of water so weighing out the correct quantity of pool-shock is nearly impossible unless you have access to a scientific scale (micro-balence ?)

The best way to use it would be to make liquid bleach using your pool-shock and then use that as a water treatment.
