Waxed cheese sucess!!!

Post by jasper1 »

Just thought I'd share a little victory moment....

Needed cheese tonight for a meal, and realised the fridge was bare. Went into my ambient preps for some cheese I'd waxed back in April, thinking it was going to be minging. I'd had some about a month after I'd waxed it and it was fine, but the sceptic in me didn't hold out much hope for it after all this time. How wrong was I......it was fine, and tasted delightful. No discolouration, mould, rancidity.....nothing.

Will go ahead and wax some more now I know the longevity is there.

Nicely done.:)

I do like a nice piece of cheese.
Two is one and one is none, but three is even better.

Fancy doing a picture tutorial and putting on the site? It would be great to see the process. :D

I would LOVE to say it was all my own doing.......but alas, my nose would grow more than Pinocchio's!!

I thought it wouldn't work. How could it? But people have been eating cheese for thousands of years, without any refrigeration. I looked into it A LOT before doing it, and decided to go with the advice of a US prepper, who makes a lot of sense in her practical video's. It was a lot easier than I thought it was going to be. Here's the link

I have the label, somewhere safe (probably with all those lost odd socks), from the wax I bought. I'll dig it out later, as it worked a treat.

*Note to self*........learn how to spell success, you numpty!!!

Thanks for sharing the link.

Tell me more about the wax. Where did you get it? How much did you use etc

Thanks

I bought it on ebay. I can pm the seller's name if anyone wants it. Have looked through my purchase history, I paid £7.30 + £2.65 postage for about 1 kilo. Only melted about a quarter of it in a small pan (don't over fill it though to take into account liquid displacement) for 6 small blocks of cheese (4x4x2 inches) and there was still plenty in the pan. You need to melt enough to enable a "dip" to cover half the widest part of your block size every dip, but the beauty of it is you can re melt it and use again if you melt too much. Also, when you remove the wax from a stored piece, you just wash and re melt that too.

Hope that helps

OK so now I'm officially the happiest prepped in the kingdom!
No.1 Always wondered why we have to keep cheese in the fridge ... Yet in Portugal there's just sits on the shelf! .... And now I think about it they are allllll wax covered!! Question answered!

No. 2 .............I can store.CHEEEEESE,! In my survival stash!!! Ohhhh happy days ....will have to do some research into how long its shelf life is :D

That video on cheese waxing is amazing ..... After you get over the comedy factor of her repeating ... "This is how I wax my cheese" ...... OK so I'm jeuvenile lol

Thank you for this gem
