i`m thinking of putting a couple of rhubarb plants in the bottom of the garden .
whens the best time to do this , i`m guessing spring , am i right in thinking i can just go the garden centre for them .

Rhubarb can be grown any time of the year, i preferred to grow mine in large potsjust to be able to have better control of their size. also easier to move when it snows etc.

Spring or autumn, depending on the variety. If I were you, I would wait and chose a spring variety, as we are approaching winter - see the list at the URL, below:

If you know someone in your area who grows it, ask them to split / divide a crown, at the appropriate time. This has the advantage that you can see the variety, how well it grows, etc., as well as asking the gardener for advice!
Planting in spring will also allow you to prepare the soil, which (I would argue), takes a minimum of a month. I grow rhubarb in a 'moist' part of the garden (top end, which gets the least amount of sun) as a space filler. Before planting it, I dig a big hole and throw as much organic material in it as possible: then I cover with a thin layer of soil and repeat until the hole is filled.
