I guess as well as remembering to rotate the cans in your prep storage, its worth remembering that the shops do it also.
Today i spotted an offer of tins of corned beef in Poundstretcher, Picked up the first few tins, BBE Sept 2017.. reached to the very back of the shelf and spotted the tins at the back BBE AUG 2018, needless to say these tins have made a great addition to my prep cupboard

Oh yeh, I always check dates. I have done some shelf filling in a supermarket and food does not always get rotated. I threw away plenty of stuff that had gone out of date!

I have always found that buying special offers or much cheaper tinned food means either less content (e.g. beans in BB can) or a less quality product. Always buy the more expensive (or at least not the cheapest) products for emergency use. What could be more frustrating to open a can after TSHTF to find it only half full!). I always buy one tin of something and use it and if OK go back and get stock straight away from the same batch.

I would L O V E to see some pictures of this. I spent an obscene amount of time over the weekend trying to make one of the foodstoragemadeeasy ones, only to find the bloody cardboard (even though it was good and strong) moved about enough to turn the whole job bad. I was just about high on the copydex smell AND I came up with a few new swear words too!!!!!! Said rack is now cowering in the corner of the garage, and tins are still on shelves. Found some plans to buy online to make a wooden version, but still thinking about it. Your piccy's would be a help.......KalPrep wrote:I built a can storage rack to facilitate this. Can't remember if I posted some pics, great in that like the expensive bought ones new stuff always goes in at the back and the next can out is the one nearest expiry

Re: Rotating stored cans
I've never noticed this with special offers; certainly when I've bought stuff on offer at Tesco or ASDA the cans are the same as usual and weigh the same, but are temporarily cheaper. Some of the things which are permanently cheaper are in smaller cans (e.g. 300g instead of 450g) but I just make sure to check the weight. I doubt that any food manufacturer would get away with misdeclaring the weight of a product. Also it would be dangerous to sell a half-full tin with an air bubble in; if there were fewer beans the volume would have to be made up with tomato sauce.happyhacker wrote:I have always found that buying special offers or much cheaper tinned food means either less content (e.g. beans in BB can) or a less quality product.
