Thanks for the link. There are some great books on there. Just want to recommend John Seymours' 'The Complete Book of Sufficiency'. Absolutely great book on how to create and manage a homestead. Has information on when to plant, what to plant, how to manage the soil, rear livestock, make cheese, brew beer, make baskets, thatch roofs, and so much more. Anyone interested in self sufficiency or learning traditional crafts should download this book. I also have a hard copy that I keep in my BOB.

I would recommend the Collins Gem version of the SAS Survival Guide so you can easily fit it in your BOB. As for John Seymour's 'The Complete Guide to Self Sufficiency' you will not be disappointed. If you only buy one book on self sufficiency it should be this one. I would also recommend John Seymour's 'The Self Sufficient Gardener' which you can get easily enough on amazon:

For both John Seymour books try to buy one of the older editions. I have read that the new editions don't have the same amount or quality in the pictures and diagrams of what is discussed in the books though I can't back that up. Owning an older copy of both books though I can attest to their brilliance.

Here is a list of some of my favourite books:

- The Complete Book of Self Sufficient (John Seymour)
- The Self Sufficient Gardener (John Seymour)
- Collins Gem SAS Survival Guide (Lofty Wiseman)
- Collins Gem Food for Free
- Mrs Beeton's Household Management
- How to Produce and Grow Your Own Food (Charles Boff)
- The Big Book of Gardening (Charles Boff)
- Book of the Farm (Henry Stephens)
- First Steps in Wine Making (C.J.J Berry)
- Medicinal Plants of Britain and Europe (Wolfgang Hensel)
- Collins Gem Herbs for Cooking and Health
- Collins Gem Alternative Remedies
- Collins Gem First Aid

I have other books but looking at these will get you started. Think you can get all of them on Amazon, some really cheap. If you can only get two for now get the two John Seymour books. They are books to be revered. I would recommend all books on that list but it is important you have a look at each one and look at their reviews to see if they are appropriate for you. All of them are worth a look though. Enjoy. :D

Thanks for the lovely list of books.

I just bought The Complete Book of Self Sufficient (John Seymour) yesterday i was thrilled with it. And there is a lovely picture of a allotment and that is actually the idea of how my garden was to look like over time and to actually see a picture of what it could be like i was delighted. I have ordered SAS Survival Guide John Lofty Wiseman and Ray Mears Outdoor Survival Handbook.

A good choice of books you've just bought. I'm glad to see you have bought a copy of Seymour's book. I believe everyone should own a copy.

What's your garden like at the minute? If you're going from a normal vegetable free garden to a vegetable garden using advice found in Seymour's book you should consider creating a thread on here about it. Would make for a great read.

The area in the back where i am putting my garden is nothing at the moment just weeds and more weeds and rocky soil. It is a very hard challenge but one i am planning to overcome. For the month of nov and dec i am going to list all the jobs i need to do and in jan and feb check them and i know the John Seymour book will help. I can picture how my garden will be like. i just need to get over the hurdle of preparing the soil and then everything would fall into place.
