Long Term Food Storage

Post by Billy81 »

Hi guys :-) My name's Mike and I'm new to the forum, I've joined this and another forum hoping someone can give me some more info on the things I need to know. I want to store food long-term, I have canned food but want to store grain, rice etc preferably lasting as long as possible! Does anyone have any experience in long-term food storage, I know there's bags you can buy, but what the difference is between mylar and aluminium foil coated bags I have no idea! Anyone with any experience or links I' be grateful. Thanks for your time guys and thanks for the forum!

I believe the Mylar with oxygen absorbers in sealed food grade plastic buckets is the favourite way our American friends do it, even using some dry ice to get most of the oxygen out, I don't do that we rotate and eat what we store, and use about 10-15 Kilos of rice and pasta in a year, basically I've worked out that I will only consider storing dry food in this manner when my other stuff can be considered long term.
I have a strategy, it's not written in stone, nor can it be, this scenario has too many variables, everything about it depends on those variables, being specific is not possible.

Billy welcome to the forum.

I'm not an expert but what I have done is mylar bagged up rice and pasta in various size bags with oxygen absorbers inside I then heat sealed them and placed them inside standard food grade buckets with another oxygen absorber in the bucket and sealed with the lid. I roughly have 100 kg of each as long term storage I bought this at cash and carry shops very cheaply. This should last 20 years no problems if stored in good conditions.

I have used the self sufficiency shop for my buckets and bags they will do a starter kit for you or call foe advice. There are other places that sell these items as well, just google,I have no connection to the shop just received good service.

There are a multitude of videos on you tube taking you through the storage process which are worth a look. Use the search engine here as well as there are loads of great posts, advice and tutorials for you to learn from.

Good luck.

don't forget that grain has been found in tombs and after thousands of years is still edible as long as it was kept in air tight containers , seal unopened bags of rice in air tight bucket and add an oxygen absorber ( you can make one by making a 6 inch square bag and stuffing it with metal wool and adding 2 table spoons of table salt to it and sealing the bag)

Thanks tigs, that's good to know. I'm curious though, how does the process work?

The salt’s acidity activates corrosion of the fine steel wool and the rusting of the steel absorbs oxygen in the container.
