Pooch Preps or Doggy BOBs

Thought i would make my 40th post a new topic

I was wondering how many of you have dogs, and if you have considered this as an option?



I have one for my Best Buddy (no thats not him above, but not far off )

as well as a set of these, and trust me they are brillant for protecting a dogs feet, fitted with Genuine Vibram Soles

Well you wouldn't want to run about during SHTF in bare feet now would you!!

A lot of people instantly and with out thinking about it start spouting the "Oh thats Cruel" but lots of the dog owners (some preppers) i know have now kitted out their pooches, In fact mine loves it, as soon as I grab it he knows we are on the move


In His BOB he carries
4 small tins of wet food
1 Folding water bowl
1 Folding food bowl
1 small bag dried food
1 Small Bag of dried vegetable broth mix (inside Cookpot)
1 Medical kit
1 Survival tin
1 True mini Lock Knife
1 Emergency mylar Blanket
1 4x4 Mtr Sil nylon Tarp
1 length of Para Chord
1 Down dog bed & microfleece blanket rolled up around
Titanium Cookpot and secured to top loops with shock chord

Total weight 4.3 Kilos which is fine, as the general rule of thumb is not to allow your dog to carry more than 25% it's total body weight, and to work him up to it in stages, from a canine psycology point of view dogs really love taking on the job of carrying stuff, as it gives them a purpose in the heirarchy of the pack, it is also a very usefull tool in the training of boisterous dogs as it modifies their behavior slowing them up and burning off energy quicker on short walks.

It's worth seriously thinking about as a SHTF option as the dog can carry the basics of short term survival, and so if you lose your BOB or are mugged for your pack you have Backup, yeah ok the packs aren't cheap, my Ollie's Ruffwear Pallisades pack was around £90 nut there are other cheaper options if you shop around

Some of them come with built in water Bladders and all have detachable Panniers to allow your dog to rest.


So what are your thoughts as dog owners to this, as a viable add to your Preps

BRILLIANT! I have looked at these (or similar ones) in pets at home. I have a siberian husky called Kio and he loves jobs like pulling (obviously) or carrying stuff. I havent tried him with a kit bag yet but its a very interesting idea. How much are these?

Got to be Honest S85 their not cheap M8 the ruffwear palisades usually come in at around £100 from Amazon, just had a wee look and the Approach Pack is at £79 on amazon at the moment.
But having said that! you do get a whole lot of backpack for your money, I couldnt believe it when the Pallisades i ordered for my dog came, the build quality is excellent, better than some Rucksack i've seen.

The Outward Hound ones come in a bit cheaper around £60-70

Lower down the scale you have the

On the trek medium/large at around £30-35

Ezydog Summit pack large at around £40 This is a nice budget pack actually but you have to completely remove it for the dog to rest.

The Kerbl dog one is cheaper still at around £20-25

As a rule of thumb stay away from the cheaper square ones as they tend to put too much weight on the dogs spine, you really are looking to get one that puts most of the load over the dogs shoulders, the Outward hound one is ok as you have a harness that you attach the panniers to with velcro so you can set it farther forward if you wish.

Sizing can be a problem as they all mostly use differing measurments, so i would suggest that you visit individual manufacturers sites for measurment requirements

The Ruffwear BarkNboots GripTrex boots usually are around £70 for a set and you can also buy individuall replacements if one gets lost, you can also get ruffwear socks to go with the boots at £12 a set
The socks are great if the dog sleeps in the tent with you as they help protect the Groundsheet from pokey tallons and your back from getting poked in the night with cold pads

wonder if my two little shittypoos (shihtzu) could manage to carry something like that - they haven't even figured out that they need to catch the stick I throw to them and not just stand there and stare at it.

Don't see why not maxilaura, you can certainly get backpacks in shittypoo size

here's one on a chihuahua



Mind you there might only be room for a lofty wiseman a lighter and a bag of treats, they'll be flat out tired afterwards

What a great idea!

I have begun prepping for my cat, but that's strictly for a bug-in situation. In a bug-out situation I don't think we'd be able to make the cat follow us, she'd unfortunately probably be on her own at that point.

Dogs would be much easier to bug out with ... not to mention providing some protecting for their beloved owners!

Have seen the back packs on eBay but hadent considered the dog boots certainly am now

Brilliant thanks for the infor i shall be looking into this very soon!! I asked Kio tonight and he looked at me as if to say "i dont mind a back bag but you can take the shoes and shove them!
