Hello from North Lincs

Post by Jane_doe »

Morning all!

Not a great deal to say about myself but I'm a 25yr old female with 2 young children and an unsupportive OH. (We will eat him first! j/k)

What drives me to prep is that I've been in some dark holes I've struggled to get out of and I am determined to not be there again.

I have a mental illness, though I wouldn't consider myself a liability but my OH seems to think this need to prep is just because of the disorder and paranoia.... So I am very much alone in protecting my family.

I have a tendency to bulk buy food but with no real plan or storage space. So I need now to get myself together and get organised. I am currently having a lot of work done in my house and new furniture and storage with the hope to sneak myself off some space for preps. I am planning on buying a gas lift bed for my daughter and using the space contained for prep storage. She is only 5 so won't realise the space is there. And hopefully no one looking at the bed will realise as it is not obvious that it lifts up! (I'd quite like us all to have gas lift beds but I've been told no!)

There is a lot of skills I need to learn and I have no idea when I will learn them as I work almost full time and attend university full time I think I touch base at home from 10.30pm - 6-8am most days depends if I am doing night shifts and Uni as well.

That's about it for now I think. :D

Hello Jane Doe.

Take it easy and don't overwhelm yourself, it sounds like you have a lot on your plate already!

There have been lots of discussion about storage in here, do a search and you'll see some great ideas and then your OH can't see won't hurt him!! ;)

My OH was reluctant at first but I sold him on the idea I was prepping for lack of work (it happened), bad weather (it happened), unexpected big bills so less money for food one month (it happened).

Anyway, make yourself at home and when you've got a few spare minutes take time to read top tips for new preppers

JD,
Welcome.
I'm bipolar and it's taken me some time to separate the paranoid and the real need for prepping.
Take it slow. Read lots. Think about what you're prepping for. For me it's mostly based around illness, income and keeping a roof over our heads.

Thanks everyone for the welcome!

Hobo, thanks for sharing its nice to not feel so alone with it all.

I want to prep mainly for, bad weather as we are in a village with 1 shop (4 pubs though!) the nearest town is about 90-120mins walk away on a good day let alone in snow!

Financial collapse at home, or in the wider economy... Power cuts etc....

I don't so much believe in an apocalypse though if there was one I'd like the best chance of survival or at least to be in the position to decide whether it was worth living or not haha.

I was wondering if the nations power went out would 3G and mobile signal go out as well? I assumed it was all powered by electric but I wasn't too sure about the satellites.

Hi and welcome.

There are a few posts on here about can storage and circulation box type things (thats what they are called....honest!) maybe see if you have room for one of them somewhere.

Im sure there is more tech talk on here somewhere but if the power goes out nationally then i believe your phone is shot too. Many people have got spare phones that power themselves from the phone lines..not sure if this is possible during a national power cut but worth looking into. As said above take it slowly and there are plenty of people here to help if you need it! I look forward to reading your posts.

Take care
