Wind up/solar iphone charger recommendation

Post by jasper1 »

I don't like to keep asking, but I just wondered if anyone has one they could recommend to me. There seem to be a lot of disappointing reviews for them out there. I did find a video on you tube of a guy who re-wired a wind up torch to take a usb cable, and I could sweet talk someone I know to have a try if push came to shove, but I'd rather source one myself (with your help)....

Cheers

I'm looking for one too all the ones I've seen seem stupidly inefficient

Think bug in a cheap car battery and a car charger. And a set of jump leads to charge it up off the car

I have an Energizer SP1001. It's not brilliant but it does charge an iPhone by solar. Also has a built in battery so it can be recharged via USB.
I recently experienced Plymouth City centre so that's why I prep.

I have a torch with a USB power take-off, you need to do a hell of a lot of cranking to get anything like a usable charge.

You want this for Bug-Out or Bug-In ?

I ask because I have one of These* as part of my Bug-In gear (I've used it car camping as well)

I've not tried to run anything serious off the Inverter but the USB and 12v sockets do exactly what it says on the tin.

* I got mine when it was half price, they seem to have a sale on a couple of times a year

How big is the battery in that? and how much was it?

had a "portable jump start pack " appart a few years ago and the SLA battery inside was tiny you'd be lucky to jump start a moped it was the sort of size you find in a rechargeable torch or burglar alarm

If you follow the Link, they're currently 50 notes (but with free delivery if you don't mind waiting a few days).

As to size, its the same kinda volume as a big shoe-box (the type you get workboots in). I'm not sure exactly how big the battery is as its enclosed ....Maybe a couple of bags of sugar?

This isn't a fast-dump of power (like a starter-pack) its a slow trickle...... Mind you, I have run a toaster off the Inverter (as a test, I wouldn't be doing that for real) but it couldn't manage a mains hairdrier (we have a 12v one for car camping)

If you are passing B&Q, they have a similar unit for £49.99. I bought one for my wife's car. We've had no need to use the jump start but the air pump, inverter and USB/12v charging points all work okay.

Sorry i didn't spot the link  looks nice for a self contained unit all my attempts look a bit heath robbinson and err slightly less portable

viewtopic.php?f=38&t=8297

or the nice simple croc clip and fag socket approach coupled with a car / leisure battery

A solar cell charger unit is on my wish list have to make do with mains charger or the charge output off a genny / car and jump leads for now

I think somebody posted about that product somewhere on here.

Basically, a bit heavy for a foot Bug-Out and requires a long burn (therefore much fuel) to get a decent charge
