Razor clams

Post by CharpentierTom »

Hi does anyone have any experience catching razor clams? I spent a few hrs and a large pot of salt at the beach today trying to catch some but had very limited success. I checked the tide and went when it was right out. Am thinking that they must be seasonal however I did have wife, dog and small child so trying to be quiet was out of the question if this matters.

Many thanks

take a sharpish knife with a long blade (a breadknife is good) and walk very slowly up to the breathing hole that indicates that there is a razor clam.

You then slide the knife, not point first but rather the whole sharp side in and downwards towards where the clam should be. Start a good 2-3 inches away from the hole at least. You will feel the edge catching the clam shell, then all you have to do is dig it up – your knife pressing against it stops it from digging its way to freedom.

I'm veggie, but I'll be storing that information against the apocalypse

Tom - keep the shell, use it as mulch on your veggies.

Razor "clam guns" are popular in the US..

Theres loads of youtube vidoes showing people using them and they seem really efficient, might be worth making one.. I also saw a couple for sale on Ebay from US sellers at around £40..
