Does anyone know of a place in Scotland where you can be taught essentially field butchery?
It's something I've always wanted to learn anyway how to properly and humanely kill, butcher and prepare say a chicken or pheasant. I've had a look online a videos but wouldn't feel comfortable doing it without proper instruction - not just for the animals welfare but..
I don't want to end up cutting off a finger whilst covered in bits of guts and all that.
Also whats your thoughts on fishing.. will it be sustainable in a SHTF situation.. Won't everyone be down at the beach/river/loch trying to catch the last trout (I've caught a fish once when I was 12 and it slipped out my hands back into the river - so can't see this being high on my list of things to do if starving..)

your best bet is to ask a local butcher or survival centre and ask if they would run a course.
Hands on Bushcraft, 11 Coriander Way, Swindon, Wiltshire, SN2 2RZ Tel: 07598 491989
run a 1 day butchery survival course for £150.
it is something that i need to practice as its been years since i put food on the table myself.
I havnt done much fishing so have tried crayfish traps which work well.
Not that it's something I've done a great deal of, but when I was young I would help my dad who was a butcher, not that he did any slaughtering , but my point is I'm not afraid of it, I've watched enough H.F Waffelingtoff and the like of youtube stuff to know what to do, and have the knife skills to do it, it's probably more about not having the cash to go on a course though for me, so if you can find instruction and can afford it, why not
I have a strategy, it's not written in stone, nor can it be, this scenario has too many variables, everything about it depends on those variables, being specific is not possible.

Nice idea - think I'll tap up the local butcher... have myself a few pies while I'm at it.. not sure if they'll do the full slaughter though.
I reckon I could convince the my partner to a weekend away butchering chickens - nothing like a bit of team building in a relationship HA

Briggs wrote:If you search for 'field prepare a pheasant' I posted up a how-to PDF. That should give you a good idea of what's what.
Unfortunately you're at the other end of the UK so I can't offer to demo.

Thanks - I like the guide its similar to one I saw for pigeon/chickens etc. I still wouldn't be happy doing this without instruction. More for the animals welfare.. I'm not to fussed about my skills in the actual butchery.. the guide shows what needs to be done

Have you looked on the BASC website to see if they have any game prep courses?
I recently experienced Plymouth City centre so that's why I prep.
