I've seen it done so I know it works:
Planting Potatoes that have started to flower/sprout in pots with a decent soil and they will grow new potatoes.
I think this is a fantastic way of sustaining a food source. You need zero garden space and could potentially if you scale this you will have enough potatoes so that you won't need to buy them.
I'm not a gardener but have a balcony and would like to try it:

Is kind of helpful but has anyone done this and whats the right time to plant etc..

Container gardens can be very productive. I had great results with spuds, and courgettes particularly this last Summer. Two tips. You need to start with good compost. You'll get nothing out if you put nothing in. Then you have to manage the pots, water and feed them. You cannot just plant and forget.
Do your research and have a go next Spring, you may surprise yourself and find a new interest.

Yea - I'm really up for it aside from prepping - could save a few pennies.
I was wondering if there are any veggies you can plant and they will just grow and keep growing - much like dreaded weeds.. I guess if you plant mushrooms they will pretty much just keep popping up?

For containers, if you want perennials, herbs are the best bet. Perennials (plants that grow on and on) do prefer a proper garden as their tap roots can keep on moving in the soil. In a container there is limited space.

Re: "Potato Pots" Easy potato growing.
Hi Dundee prepper,
I have had success growing potatoes in this way. I used 5 large black dustbins and planted 4 or 5 spuds in each using a mix of compost from the tip and regular soil got a reasonable harvest. Tip make sure you drill holes in the bins so they can self drain else they'll rot.
I'm kind of the opinion that you can put spuds in pretty much any kind of soil and they will grow am happy to be corrected here but I have never had a problem growing them.
I don't know if any1 else does this but I never throw away the seeds I take from the veg I am eating I dry them in a tub near the wood burner and then bag them and replant them seasonaly. I am building an enormous stock pile of different seeds.
I have found that I get good results from chilli's, sweet peppers and amazing results from pumpkins and courgettes. I think for me pumpkins are the ultimate easy grow and you get so many seeds from each. Trying to find interesting ways to eat them is the hard bit. Am very partial to spicy pumpkin soup.

Hi, thanks for info - Pumpkins seem a good idea, are they quite hardy? - I'm thinking about just going out and planting veg in a remote but accessible area - a quiet little corner off the beaten tracks - who's going to find it? I'm looking to only have to go out maybe 2/3 times a year to harvest/replant etc...CharpentierTom wrote:Hi Dundee prepper,

You always find 'wild' blackberries, gooseberries and rhubarb etc (I know some rhubarb is poisonous) I'm hoping to plant them along with some veg - maybe an apple/plum tree or two and have a growing supermarket ready waiting - maybe I am over simplifying this but I'm going to research it see if its possible.
