Gardening

Post by LDNprepper »

Leveled out part of my garden yesterday and built a raised bed, so today I'm going to put some onions, carrots and garlic in to see if I get anything.
I am also going to convert one of my sheds into a 'greenhouse' type growing room with heaters and lamps. Not sure what to grow in there yet so any suggestions much appreciated and if anyone knows anything else that will grow in the raised bed.

At this time of year, its not the growing, it is getting the seeds to germinate in the cold. Mostly, for winter veggies, one plants in the late summer and autumn so the plants are well established by the time they have to fight the winter. However, there are still plants you can start and grow.

Here's a link to get you started. I recommend a web search for "winter vegetables". There are at least two books on this topic that I know of - probably more as well.

Also google up the "hungry gap". If one is growing food as preps it is a good idea to practice filling his time of the year.

be careful about heating your shed . you might get a visit from the boys in blue , thinking you have more in there than a few veggies on the go .
there was a woman , was it last winter or the one before .
she took her rabbits and put them in the garage with a heater on , police chopper went over and registered the heat from the garage and she was raided .it was all over the national press at the time .
YES i walked away mid sentence , you were boring me to death and my survival instincts kick in .

TwoDo is spot-on regarding there now not being enough heat / sun for germination.

That said, your garlic will grow well, ready for a good harvest in the late Spring. I tend to plant garlic in early November: it will grow very quickly, until this time of the year and then become (more or less) dormant until March - depending, obviously, on the weather. I always put in an extra row over the winter solstice for luck. No idea why - a family tradition, the reasoning behind which, has long been forgotten!
