How Safe Am I?

Discussed this with other preppers in the past where they've said that I'm extremely lucky as to where I live if SHTF.

I live in a rural village with a population of about 140.

The community is tight-knitted. Everyone knows everyone and sees each other on a daily basis.

There are many community orientated events and meals hosted within the village.

However, I'd say 60+ of the residents are retired, most of which haven't done anything on their own for a good few years. Poor folks

I'd say that we'd bond together as a community pretty well if SHTF but I'm worried because we're not THAT far from Milton Keynes, which has a population of about 220,000.

Do you think people from there would travel to my location as well as other surrounding villages of about the same population seeking refuge? Should I take any precautions regarding this?

Around 12 miles.

Nothing particular, just anything that would cause a lot of people to think 'to the countryside' or 'we need to get out the city'

Something also to consider is how to deal with your friendly retired neighbours in your village when they find out you have stockpiled resources and their requests for your assistance start draining your preps. Sooner or later you are going to have to say 'no' and that's when it could turn ugly.

It's good that it's a close nit community and it's good to mingle and take part in local community events. But in a disaster situation, loyalties go out the window when it comes to self preservation.

If desperate enough, those retired country folk may be the ones that try to murder you for your food! I wouldn't let on that you're prepping. I wouldn't tell a soul except close family.

Being so remote may even mean that YOU may be the one that has to venture into Milton Keynes to replenish your stocks.

I would not worry about townies from MK coming to steal from your village, if they did you would have the home ground and hopefully the advantage.

As already said, keep your preps under your hat. Get by, help where you can.

I'm planning on supporting an unprepared community and will have to give people who turn up both basic food and something useful to do.

E.g. "Here's a clip board. Make a list of how much plastic sheeting we have among us." "Who has first aid skills." Etc.

"You two help joiner Jim build a community soup kitchen with those materials and tools" (Needed if the gas/electricity is out).

"Forage for these three types of plant for the soup in that copse."

Keeping people busy may fend off panic and strengthen a community but will require forward planning and preparation.

I admire your generosity buddy But generally i personally would find it hard to be that optimistic , humans are animals after all and in an extreme case of SHTF that would become more apparent quickly especially in a densely populated area such as mine .

i live in a similar community yes for natural disaster like the flooding at the moment that iam going through help your elderly community
but if like the situation of people coming from big towns and cities iam afraid to say protect you and family as its survival time stay in for as long as you can then hide in the hills till its passed.
because if we were to have major catastrophic disaster most of britain would be dead within about 9/15 days those who who can vanish and survive for about 1 month will survive.(hopefully)
save your family hopefully survive ,try and save a retired community and you most probably will die trying
harsh i know i have thought about this over and over but at the end of the day its what ever you want to do and if the time comes i hope its a clear and easy decision
